W58 or G52?
W58 or G52?
got a question whats the difference between a W58 gearbox and the G52 gearbox? My 84 LN65 has the G52 and the 88 supra surf has a factory W58. Whats the go?
W58 was bolted to most of the IFS 2.4TD trucks and was a 5-speed, G52 was in most Hilux utes, and was originally a 4-speed, with the option of a 5th, then from about 87ish on they were virtually all 5-speeds factory.
Most G52s seem to have a PTO output (if you can find a PTO to bolt to it then it would possibly even be useful
), W58s don't
G52 t/c lever is located on the gearbox, and uses pushrods thru to the t/c, W58 has the lever coming directly out of the t/c (better t/c for use in dual setups)
Other than that, I believe the G52 has smaller bearings so can be less reliable when thrashed.
Dimensions virtually identical, output flanges and positions identical, input shaft identical... they can be swapped with a little trans-tunnel trimming (because of the different locations of the t/c lever on the assembly)
Hope that helps
Steve
