Who runs a TB42?

Who runs a TB42?
After peoples thoughts on the TB42, and whether they find they are a good motor. Theres mixed thoughts in oz about them being under powered and using excessive amounts of fuel, but would like to hear from anyone here that has experience with them.
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Who runs a TB42?
Dad had one in his nissan (was carby though) years ago, but it didn't spin the 35's that well so he put an LT1 in (last of the SBC before LS1) retaining the chev gearbox. The LT1 and box was 40% lighter than the nissan stuff that came out, it had much more power and ended up with much better economy.
It was once compared to a stock patrol with a tb42 (and efi) on a long trip, and even spinning 35's instead of small tyres it was more economical.
Lt1 is now removed though and an LS1 is being slotted in its place.

What are they like for parts? Haven't seen much to do with them on Trademe.

Reasonably good in terms of power, but not efficient at all. I wouldn't own one as a daily driver that's for sure. I get about 300-350kms out of a tank, which is about $120/130 to fill at the mo (never worked out what it is in litres
)
In terms of power, I lined mine up with PR's TD42 turbo once on the west coast and I just managed to pull away from him after he got a jump on me at the start. I'd love to turbo one because it would make a world of difference! As it is they do spin up my 33" Mudzillas pretty good, but I'm not sure how it would go with 35's with the Auto. A manual would be sweet, or reduction gears or something for the bigger tyres.
Parts aren't exactly easy to come by. It took me a while to track down a starter motor and ECU when I drowned mine. The wrecker I got the ECU from said that they were getting rid of their Y60 petrol parts because they didn't really move off the shelves fast enough. There's just no that many of them around.
All in all, for a offroad vehicle the TB is a good engine. I don't regret owning it until I get it on the road for long trips (which I don't do much of). It's much quieter than a rattly old diesel though!
If you are thinking about swapping one into a truck I'd probably suggest turboing it or just go for what Turoa's father did... that sounded and went a shit load better!

Solid as motors, never need anything but a few ancillary bits and pieces. Injected motors are much better both power and economy wise than carby models. Good to modify as they are strong as, make good reliable hp with just bolt on bits.

You mean like bolt on superchargers and intercoolers

That sort of thing works a charm on the injected model.
