Should be when I killed my 2.8 I did a bit of research and most of the parts were interchangable, never looked at a swop but it looks like the only differance in the blocks was cylinder size.... the gearbox has an integrated bellhousing so they couldn't change that, the head, injector pump, water pump etc all swop over ....

If you really want to make certain you could do what I'm planing to do to my old wanker and drop in a lexus bolted up to 5 speed cruiser box  this way I solve the lack of power, weak box and I get to keep my pto winch 8)

2.8 used lager transmission and diffs so yoiu might looking at not only the engine. (2.8 Pajero has body lifted in factory about 30mm to clear lager transmission.

May be chaper to get new track with 2.8TD? 93 or 94?
Or go for V8 like De-Ranged suggested.
