Landcruiser info please

Post by Project413 »

Well, my search for an sj413 is proving fruitless, and i'm getting sick of catching the bus, so its time to bite the bullet and buy something. I've got $3500 to spend and have been looking at mid 80's swb landcruisers. I've seen a few I like on trademe but need to know a few things about them.

First of all, what are the diff engine options, so far i've seen 4L's, 3.4 diesels and 2.4 diesels. The way oil prices are going (cheers america) im looking at the diesels. Are one of the variants better than the others? how big are the tanks in them and how many kms could you expect to get? Also, in general terms, are there any problems to look out for with landcruisers, given that the ones i'll be looking at will have done around the 200k mark?

Cheers

Look or the 13BT powered ones (3.4 turbo diesel) in your price range, and have it checked by a reputable diesel mechanic...

Look for rust in the body. If in doubt take it to a panelbeater to have them check it too...

They are a pretty basic truck, but at 200k's it will probably need something... if not when you buy it then sometime soon after.

Also check the 5-speed changes smoothly and theres no noise in 5th. Also check that it doesn't pop out of 1st under compression (ie, throttle off down a hill).

Hi Nick unless a landcruiser has some maintenace documentation ,they will always have a few things that need fixing at 200k/klm.

However they are heavy duty 4x4 and can be rebuilt easily with basic tools.

Steve summed it up pretty well about the gear box ,also looks for leaks in that area.
Check the out put flanges for movement.

Everyhting else is like any vehicle. coolant system ,brakes ,clutch.
Just spend some time.

Most of them come in 2 diff ratios 4.11(most common) or 3.7

The fuel tanks are usually around 20 galons or 90 ltr.
The 6cyl 2H 4l should get 23-24 mpg and around 24-25 for the 3B 4cyl.

The littl 2.4 I think will get high 20s.Watch out for head and head gasket problems with these. Be very wary of any 2.4 with signs of overheating.

I'd also suggest you don't discard the petrol option too quick. A lot of them have LPG conversion on the 4.2l 2F engine. At 80c/l it's heaps cheaper to run than a diesel...

If you want fuel economy stay away from the auto's, I had an 87 MWB 3.4T w/- 4spd auto & it used diesel bigtime.
