Why does it have to be so complicated ?

I just drive onto a pallet on a forklift and measure the distance to the ground when you can drag a piece of paper from under opposing wheel without any other calculations. I have 720mm at the front and 800mm at the rear.

I personally dont think it means much because most people have down travel leaving very little weight on the wheel. I have open diffs and are not allowed to use my lockers on the ramp so a person with a lockrite or wound up LSD can out perform me on a ramp. But On the track I will drive past them every time.

I read the link as well and working it out on a calculated the figures are not much different.

Actual to the ground at front 720 mm using the calc 732.12 in inches
Rear 800 mm using the Calc 813.66

I still think it is a waste of time as there are so many other factors.

the whole idea is when the first rear wheel comes off the ground so having open diffs is of no dissadvantage

There is a big difference between losing traction on a ramp and the wheel coming off the ground. A wheel looses traction a long time before it lifts as it pushes a truck up a ramp so having an open diff is a big disadvantage.

The ramp travel index is not a measure of off road ability, its merely a comparison tool. Although generally a vehicle with a better RTI will perform better off road, simply because all four wheels stay on the ground longer, very simple concept really
The difference was shown between our Hilux's on that rock in the chasm Richard, yours lifted a leg much earlier, and nearly flopped, whereas mine drove over it with ease. Just simple physics really. The calculator is just a method to give a reading, not relying on all ramps being the same angle, in fact a ramp is not even required to give a comparable number.
Again I say its not a method of saying "your truck aint as good as mine offroad"

Hi Jafa .
Wished I had been with you guys at Waynes.

I agree with your comments ,but with your truck you are well setup all round. Driving the steep bank on the Tailings track was not just because of articulation . You have a long wheelbase. Good power, right gearing , big tyres with low pressure etc etc and are a good driver so everything is a good setup.

Cheers Richard.

Mate, the trip with Wayne and Steve was awesome, fantastic tracks, we'll tee up a week long North island mission for ya! Few days at Rallywoods, few days at Costa, and few more up Waynes way, you'll love it

Yes, flex is not the be all and end all, you have to have the whole package, flex doesn't necessarily help with climbs, long wheelbase is the go for climbing.
