Headers for Chev in 70 series cruiser

Post by dawwen »

Gidday all
What have people used in the past in terms of headers on a TPI chev that i will be putting in my FJ70.
Block huggers look like they'll hit the engine mounts right on top of them but the other problem is i don't know what sort of off the self headers have a chance of scraping in with minor modification.

Cheers for all your help

I'd doubt anything off the shelf would come close and it would depend on where you've centred your engine, you'll probably be better off getting some fabricated for it so they fit right. You could have a look at petefj40's thread coz he played around with new headers

Hi Darren,
I also had a mission trying to figure out how to run headers. In a 70 series I dont think it is practical to have the collector come down between the chassis rails like block hugger headers do because then the exhaust would have to cross under the chassis rail or go under the transfer cross member because there is no room for the pipe to get through on the drivers side.
I decided to exit mine in the wheel arch following the same path the original exhaust used to take (on the drivers side).
Here is a pic of passenger side, looks like a giant squid attack. drivers side is similar:

The branch lengths are all aprox 400mm. this is too short to be tuned length and benefit from 'pulse scavenging' like true headers, but is quite typical of standard vehicles because the engine does get some 'kinetic scavenging'

Cheers, Matt
