Re: National 4x4 Trials - Finals - Easter Weekend - Stratford
Thanks Lilpig, We should have posted the information on here sooner but overlooked it sorry.
The Location is correct, Ball Road Alton, and is signposted from the main road. Coming from Wanganui way on SH3, Alton is just north of Patea, through Kakaramea and you'll see Ball road off to your right. From North on SH3, through Hawera, and you're not far away from Ball Road going off to your left.
Admission is $10 for adults and accompanied kids under 15 are free.
It promises to be one of the best spectator and competitor events on the calendar. To give you some idea of how hard, We're having to use 7 diggers plus some tractors for recovery, with many of the hazards a strong mix of mud and hill. Spectators will not have to walk far at all, with the first hazards only 100m from your car park. You'll be able to watch closely at least three hazards at a time with others in the distance, plenty of food and drink will be available.
One of the highlights of the day, over and above the $6,000 cash prize pool the drivers are competing for, is the meanest hill climb probably ever seen at a rally near you. BRAND-X have put $1000 at stake for the first driver who's able to conquer the hill and take the blues. I'm betting it won't get taken, I'm also betting anyone who can even get to the last little bit and decides to go for it, had better make it and take the grand or they'll be on their roof at the bottom of the hill. Let's see if the best trials drivers in the world can prove me wrong.
The Mt Egmont 4 Wheel Drive club invite and welcome all 4 wheelers to the event and look forward to seeing you there. (I'll be driving the black Wrangler talking shit over the PA system, so come and make yourself known) cheers, Gordon Burnside
p.s. please leave dogs and alcohol (an interesting mix?) at home or at least out of the rally site.

I was gonna write some bullshit about luck of the draw and wot if more than 1 get over the top, but then I sat and thought about it for a while and decided if you were first over the top, then you have broken virgin ground and truly given it everything as opposed to getting the hazard last and walking up it.
Pedro, bring ya balls, that money will cover a fair bit of gas dude and any repairs we may incur trying for the top

Just as well you didn't Skid, cos' I woulda made sure you were first just to prove you wrong! Not really possible though, the draw is being done by the Excel random Number generation system. Seriously too, that hill is unclimbable, until some smart (newly rich) person proves me wrong.......

if the hill is as bad as is said then the grand would barely cover the chopper ride

Re: National 4x4 Trials - Finals - Easter Weekend - Stratford
You'd roll down through the swamp which stretches almost to the top of the hill Pedro, soft as a sleepyhead mattress. besides, there's been a few comments about the distance of the site from the live band (Hamilton's 111 are bloody awesome) hosted prize giving we've organised, a chopper'd get you there in no time! If you come to the prizegiving, don't plan on an early night, if you can still remember the night, you'll never forget it!

you were right the bog is as soft as a sleepyheap matteress, although the getting smacked in the face by the bog as the cage went about 400mm into it aint as pleasant as you might think, we got a 10 and about 1 meter from going over the top before it went to custard, although to be fair we only have a 1/2 a back diff, crown wheel teeth where slowly breaking off as we headed up the hill, and we needed about another 5k in speed and we would of been one of the ten or so who got it

loads of mud, some bottemles,s some good and some pointless, but a load of fun, apart from the long periods of waiting for hazards to clear, good day overall
now nee to rebuild front locker, new rear diff (again) sort compressor out once and for all, get physio for neck i am ready for next season

I just read my post about repairs cost.
we broke on the hazard before the $1000 hill climb, otherwise we would have got over the top

you sure the back is sore due to the rough ride on Saturday, and not the one you recieved on the sunday/monday

Re: National 4x4 Trials - Finals - Easter Weekend - Stratford
Despite the odd sore back and a multitude of mechanical failures, the rally was a near total success. We pulled a huge crowd despite the remote(ish) location and everyone seemed happy enough. We made a few basic cockups but seemed to get over them quickly and the show rolled on.
Moose's drive over that $1000 hillclimb was spectacular and an even more spectacularly brave effort. He and his co driver were absolutely on fire when they stopped at the top because I think they knew more than anyone watching how close they were to an even more spectacular off which would have been huge. They thoroughly deserved the grand, and i was very happy to give it to them, but as an organiser I'd hoped it could have lasted a bit longer before it was collected.
There were still some hugely brave efforts to conquer the hill and as far as I'm aware from the marshals only four actually collected the blues. But I could be wrong. One to make a huge do or die effort but which ended with a roll was Fireman. he tried the left side and narrowly missed, ending with a good smack in the ear, probably the first he's ever had which was not from an irate husband.
So, a great day, great fun, big crowd, a lot of entries, a hard but driveable course, helicopters buzzing around, huge prizes including significant cash with goodies for the winners and placegetters, expensive spot prizes for the others, the $1000 BRAND-X bonus, big celebration afterwards, I think puts our rally right where the Egmont rallies have always been, among the best. cheers, Gordon

Thats totally different to what I thought happened, and it looks a hell of a lot faster than it seemed.
Compare that to Moose and yu can see how much the hazard had chewed out in 60 trucks.
How many more awesome vids you got hiding away

Re: National 4x4 Trials - Finals - Easter Weekend - Stratford
videos do not do the hill justice
its like watching the trials on the telly
what you see on the telly bears no resemblence to actal events/facts
watching us roll off that hill is so far from what it felt like in the truck
it looks so fast on the vid and in real life it felt so slow, I can vividly remember all of that hazard and what I was thinking and what I planing next etc etc
What I'm saying is that unless you were there watching or competing on that hill, you have no idea exactly what it was like.
so you can't really comment on what types of trucks would get up there.
It would be a challenge for Jafa, but it something we may never get to see.

Re: National 4x4 Trials - Finals - Easter Weekend - Stratford
Its possible, we'll probably hold our interclub challenge there (Mt Egmont/Wanganui) at some time in the future though unless you had the pegs in exactly the same places - and there was a lot of thought put into those - it wouldn't really be a fair comparison. I moved the left side pegs in by a meter from where they were first set because we really only wanted one hero on the day and I think we got four. I really thought the winning line was up the left side because i thought even though the right looked tempting, it was just too narrow and I figured anyone carrying enough pace to get through would be thrown out of the course.
Just goes to show how wrong I can be and I got even more wrong. When Moose took off I thought he'd overcooked it and was going too fast, when he reared up with only his back left rear touching I though he was a goner, when he was coming down again I thought everything would break or he'd shoot out the right of the hazard, but he didn't and he got the grand. I don't think it cut up too much for those who wanted to take the same approach, there was still plenty of grip in the launch zone. Without the grand though, once Moose had it in his pocket, the extra tenth - to 11/10ths of the driver's decision to attack would have made all the difference as to how many actually did it successfully.
What you don't see in the videos are the 1m high steps and the way they all tend to throw trucks into the bushes in the middle on both sides and while a longer wheelbase is always said to be better on hill climbs, balance is even more important on a hazard like that.
It all happened slowly Skid because adrenalin does that to everyone who is fired up. The winners have learned how to use that extra time the adrenalin gives to make those subtle small moves that count. Nice to meet you by the way, a pity I was so busy at the time. Gordon

5, Ron Sturme, John Cowper, Dean Russell, Hamish Auret and Moose. Only 3 got the 20 of which 2 rolled (us and fireman), so you did peg a hard hazard, but talking to few competitors, they thought other hazards were more befitting to have the $1000 on it, but thats thier opinion.

its all good, I could see you were busy, but I took the 2 mins we had to wait for a steward to introduce myself. I never really get to chat much on the day either, as you are always on the go either doing or looking at a hazard

Yes, i was tempted to move it over to one of the big slips which were near vertical but smooth but they, and a couple of other possibilities, were too far away from the PA system and the main centre of the rally, which was where I'd hoped to be hanging idly about for the day having a yak to any passers by. Wrong again, I didn't even get time fror breakfast, or lunch or even take a leak then got the last meal left at prizegiving. I'm usually such a lazy prick too, not my idea of a relaxing fun day! who won?

I'm usually such a lazy prick too, not my idea of a relaxing fun day! who won?
Oh yeah
fuking brilliant idea having breakfast on site in the morning, certainly saved us a hassle, bit pricey but still a bloody top idea
