Low idling...
Low idling...
Hi everyone, recently I noticed that my '94 Escudo has some interesting behaviour at idle. When cold, everything is sweet, part way through warming up I will stop at the next set of lights and it will idle at about 500 rpm (sometimes it has stalled) and then slowly creep up to around 800 - 850 rpm while stationary. The funny thing is, if I am rolling to a stop at the lights it will not creep back up to normal. Only when I have stopped will it come back. Also, if I have stopped for 5 minutes on a hot day at a store and then try and get going again, sometimes it won't even idle at all, so I have to drive the first couple of k's with the accelerator at least partly depressed to keep the rev's going. Has anybody had this trouble before? By the way I did a search and could not find much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Low idling...
if it is EFI it most likly be the Throttle postion sensor on the back of the injector manifold
it is adjustable try to turn it,you can do no damage to the motor.
other than that there is a emission sensor just under this which can be disconnected.
the blank off the hole.
hope this helps, if it is carbed most likly a block idle jet

Re: Low idling...
I would be looking at the idle air valve . Round cylinder held on the manifold by three screws . Download one of the wiring diagrams on suzukiinfo and it has a pic of it . take it off and clean it out and try again . A rough way of checking it is disconnect the wiring to it and see what it does . It should sit at a good idle then I think , the page tells you anyway .

Re: Low idling...
Just checked the resistance of the IAC. I got 13.2 ohms which is within the range specified in the Haynes manual. So I will move on to the other checks suggested (when family comitments are satisfied). Thanks guys for the ideas.
Re: Low idling...
moonhoppers 'scud had this problem too. i had a look through various manuals and noticed an 'idle speed control screw' in the top of the induction just above the throttle pos. sensor. turned this anti clockwise one turn and it now seems to idle fine.
might be worth a try??

Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
Re: Low idling...
Mine also has a idle problem, yet mines to high, its a 89, 8v tbi and when cold idles around 2k, then slowly drops down, any hints on fixing this? bearing in mind i'm no mechanic
Re: Low idling...
Thanks weemsy, I'll have a look at that. Whib, does your one have manual or automatic choke?

Re: Low idling...
If its the IAC valve its not that its electrically faulty , its more that they get gummed up and hard to move etc . The ecu may be commanding the valve to move but its stuck in one spot etc . Well worth pulling off and cleaning out .
Whib my cousins 8v vitara is just the same . Idles at 2k then dops to about 1500 or a bit less for some time until it has warmed up . Once warm its fine so not bothered with it .
Cheers

Just wish zukinfo would come back online so I could do just that

Re: Low idling...
Thanks for that Chris/Rotazuk, i found that the IAC was getting stuck when warmed up but working sweet when cold. I have not had the time to clean it out yet due to time constraints. Hopefully this will sort everything in due course. I appreciate the help from everyone, thank you.

My 16v did this it was a blocked water hose, one of the small hoses that go to the efi area, it has something to do with the auto choke, we cleaned it out and it idled fine after that.
Cheers Woody.
