IFS and IRS Paj
Does anyone have any idea how much hp the diffs and cv's from a late model IFS and IRS Paj will handle. eg 500ish hp.

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
Hi Darin,
No Idea to be honest but... Pajero's do have strong running gear.
The front diff is the same one that they have been using since the 2nd generation came out in about 1991. They are an 8 inch High Pinion and I have never heard of one breaking, I did hear a rumour somone broke one in reverse (HP design) and I frequent most Paj forums around the world. Also there are HEAPS of them about and most end up going for scrap as there is no second hand market for them.
Front axles and CV's are without doubt the strongest IFS one's available - not sure about 500hp though! I'm puttting a touch over 200 through mine with a front locker and frequently run chains on 33's which I'd suggest is as hard on things as 35's. Same gear as the Evo runs as well which is just shy of 300hp.
Now the rears - the NM - NS Pajeros all have the same IRS rear and ARB have just developed a rear locker for them. They are a 9.5 inch diff and very heavy with 33 spline and 36mm axles. I think you would be doing well to break one of these. Someone was looking at running one of these in a buggy on Outerz a couple of months back.
Found it, Bru21's post and then the link he gives you of the build up.
Ratio's range from 3.9 to 4.9 with the most common most likely to be 4.3

Thanks Glen. I figured you would be the one who knew
Also I assume ARB do a locker for the front?
So the Evo runs standard CV's? Any cromoly CV's etc available?

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
Yes ARB do ones for the front and that is what I am running. The front diff is the same diff from 1991 and is used in all Pajero's and the current funny looking Triton.
I don't know of any aftermarket CV's available. I can take some photo's of spares I have if you like.
As far as I know, the Evo runs the same CV's and I would take a guess that the same front and rear end's were used for the big race, I do know the IRS was developed for the Race and that is why the Evo pajero's were the only ones that had coil over front suspension and Independant rear suspension whilst still utilising the full chassis (the Normal Pajero's from 2000 on with the IRS have monoque).
If the Lancer Evo running gear is anything to go by then the Paj should be able to take a few more HP than std as there is some big HP going through them reliably.... but it if breaks don't blame me!!!!

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
The problem with the Evo's and new Lancer is they still run little tyres which don't put the same load on the CV's. Still the pedigree and reliability from that is a good start.

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
Andre at Speedtech in welly has had a little to do with Evos, so if cv strength is an issue and you go down that route, then there is bound to be something to put up with the power/tyre combo you run

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
What are you planning Darin? Some high tech new winch truck, or are we going off road racing? Do tell...
Rob in the Manukau club runs 35 simex's on his 3.5 v6 pajero and has done for a few years now. He only recent blew a cv and found that his model had a larger cv than the earlier models and has had trouble finding replacements. He ran the smaller earlier model replacement cv's and broke them. I'd presume the later model IFS IRS model would have the big cv like his? Something to look into anyway.

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
There are three CV's for the pajero, approx mesurments, 1982-1990 93mm. 1991-now 108mm and also a few of the recent models have the same size cv but different spline count. The aftermarket cvs are usually the 93mm ones and they break like matchsticks on 33"s but i have never broken the bigger ones jst worn them out so bad the rock the steering wheel in a straight line bt still wouldnt break.

That's interesting as a GQ CV is around 100mm! (very rough measurement)
Anyone got a spare front end I can have a play with????

Told you they're a good size!
I got an 8 inch front diff i was going to take to the scrap you can have - but its a very loooong way away from you! I can take photo's if req'd.

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
i'm watching this with great interest glen???, so for a good FAMILY club truck, a pajero that is nz new with rear locker, 3.5 petrol or 2.8 diesel, mid 90's, with say 32'' simex tyres, should go just as good as a lux or saf on 33's???
if there is a model that stands out above the others what would it be, for strength, power, reliability???
what year do they start with the irs?

IRS came out in 2000 and was what i consider the funny looking model.

Probably cheaper to buy a whole truck up here than ship it up!! It couldn't be any further but thanks for the offer.
Now what about shortening a GQ diff and fitting Paj cv's onto it for an IFS! I'm thinking that will be stringer than what I currently have?

So how good is the steering? Maybe a I need to get a complete Paj from chassis cut? So which year should I look for? Obviously I don't know squat about them.

about this wide

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
That's what I'm thinking but have the added problem of having to keep chassis rail factory. Plus about 300mm and I can keep the front and rear the same width and still be about the same as a Patrol or Lancruiser. Can't go too overboard or I'll end up driving into trees!!!
I have an idea of how to mount the arms to get around this but it still causes an issue.
I'd be pretty interested in some more info on the steering on that setup!

Hi Darin,
As promised, here are some photo's. This is an 8 inch IFS front diff, one side is splines straigh into the diff and the other is bolted onto the short axle. Remember this is passenger side input.

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
Just read the stuff on OL. Interesting to see the guys that are going this way as they are pretty switched on! Looks like the plan might be to use an IRS diff with Paj CV's and get custom shafts made.
Do you know what the spline count of the CV's is?

Re: IFS and IRS Paj
Yea,
Front IFS 28 spline 29mm
Rear IRS 33 Spline 36mm
Edit - actually I don't know what the spline count on the actual axle that goes into the CV star is.. I would presume the axle size (that goes bewtween CV's on each side) is the same but can''t be sure - I have never broken one.....
