terrano steering

Post by Safari Swb »

ive read that teranoes are prone to breaking idler arms when lifted up. is there anything that can be done to prevent this?? last thing i want is for it to break out in the bush.

You could make it easily enough. They are imported from the states, Calmini kits.

Spot on there Al; bear in mind when you do fit one, you have to loose a fat washer from that part where the bottom shaft goes through the bracket, to get the nut to fit back on fully.

I ran 33"s on mine and keep breaking cv's. I heard 32"s could be the magic number with them. Look on NOPRA if it still exits. Dedicated pathfinder/terrano US forum.

Here is the link http://npora.ipbhost.com//index.php?s=2c0040af3b65bf1e1c20ca9eb1811119&act=idx

On thing to watch for when winding the torsion bars, is your CV boots. Try to stretch them a little and re apply a heavy duty zippy tie to them. This prevents the boots from rubbing at the ribbing's when in FWD and thus reduces wear on them.
Don't wind the torsion bars up too much, or you will have no movement when the axle wants to travel as it will hit the bump stops. I will try to put up a pic of mine tomorrow to how you.
Also apply grease on the steering stops, front and rear of front axle, to reduce the squeaking when at full lock; where the arrows are.

I wouldn't advise in going any more that 2" suspension lift. I also put longer travel shocks in the rear and heavier springs. The heavier springs were/are to compensate for added weight in the back with recovery gear etc.
I also have a 2" body lift and run 31" tyres. With the rear, and front now, sway bars removed permanently, I can get my tyres rubbing inside the guards at the back under full articulation.

And the front, although not the best example

I had this very issue with 33's when I went for the cert, but I believe with the plastic flares removed and 32's it wouldn't be an issue.

I didn't really read thru this thread, but here in welly is a terrano that the boys were looking at on the last trip and they had done something to thier steering to strengthen it.

it must work coz they came 3rd at the cruiser club champs beating all the toyotas

send a PM to tuigod and ask wot they did

I think thats who it is

Yes it leans out of the corners somewhat on the highways, but then I stick to the posted speed limits and it isn't an issue. I spose you could say its a bit like a big old American car, you know how they wobble and lean on the roads ?????? :D
Off road it is fantastic, soaking up all the bumps nicely, especially corrugations on shingle roads. Here it doesn't wander all over the show, but tracks so much better.
I have kept the bars for "just in case'', but don't see me putting them back on. If we ever get a caravan it might be a different story.

I got it from a local shop who had imported a suspension kit from Calmini, this part was a leftover i believe.

Here's a picture showing the bump stops and small movement area I was talking about in an earlier post.
Image
Here you can also see the top of the outer CV boot. This area has to be watched as the ribs of the boot are rubbing together, and can cause excessive wear. It is a simple case of removing the steel band from the inside end of the boot, sliding the boot along the shaft a little and re-applying a heavy duty zip tie to the boot to secure it.
