RB30 advice

I've got my RB30 sitting here, and am still looking at putting it in the Safari, as I'm sick of having no power.
I'm considering running a standard RB30 for now, or possibly turboing it, what would be involved in turboing (as in required mods to motor to be able to handle a turbo)? I'm not after huge power, just something thats drivable as it will be a daily and I don't want outrageous fuel bills
If I go this way, it will eventually run an RB25 head.

I would much rather prefer a TD42T but it's too damn expensive for a new box/motor as I can't run a GQ box, has to be from a GU

I already have an RB30, so even if I keep it none turbo for a while, at least it'll give more power than the RD28, and hopefully not too bad on fuel standard?

Oh, one last thing, I'll be sticking with my auto box, would this complicate things more? Think the auto would hold up to it?

Any advice for/against much appreciated, as the only other option I have is sell the GU and go back to a GQ

. these motors are very strong and love turbos..guys in aussie getting insane hp reliably with the rb30. no point in going to a twin cam head, the single cam are very good and alot of guys run them on high hp motors.


if you plan on turboing it on standard internals you need to use a decompression plate. series 2 rb30 blocks already have the oil and coolant feeds for the turbos already. i doubt the standard rb30 will go much better than rd28t in a safari.

Ive never driven a petrol safari, or a rd28t one, but have a slightly tuned RB30 in my skyline, they are good strong bulletproof engines, but i would have to seriously wonder about fuel economy pushing something as heavy as a safari along. Mine used to average around 12L/100 if you didnt drive it too hard. My TD42 does around 11L/100 and if i remember rightly they are around the same torque as a RB30.
But by all means do it Love to see a RB30E+T in a saf..was going to do it to my skyline. All the people ive seen with a 30E+T seem to reckon you can run around 7psi on the standard motor, 10 with an intercooler, before you start needing to worry about forged guts or decompression. Lower boost with higher static compression gives much better fuel economy than low compression with higher boost so I've read.

Mate runs a turboed RB30 (RB25 head) in his R32 Skyline....modest 550HP at the rears (which is pretty tame compared to some) with T04Z turbo, intercooler etc. At 150km/hr in 5th, give it a bootfull (not stabbing the clutch) and it lights up the rears, steps out and f*cks off sideways. I think it would be spastic in a LWB Patrol offroader!

A young guy in Kaikoura bought this one, going to get a mate who knows him organise a drive of it to see if I go this way.
Still not sure the best way to go. Seems pretty straight foward conversion wise, but theres still the Holden V8 options too

Yeah, saw that, but told its a real PITA to get wired up and running well.
If I could get a TD42T and box for that price I'd be happy

Selling complete auto, transfer, motor, turbo, manifolds, shifters, computer, everything.....around the $5k mark for the lot i think, maybe be slightly negiotable? I really don't know i'm just an apprentice

hmmm if your going for that much i would be very seriously considering the commy v8s. ls1's are still slightly on the steep side but you can pick up a modern 5l v8 for pretty cheap. although in saying all this im loving the diesel prices at the moment, hovering around $1 per litre.

Yeah, the diesel prices are good. Problem is, I took the 5.7 SS ute to Ashburton last weekend, and it worked out the same price on fuel as the Safari
The 2.8 in this is a POS so needs to go. If I go V8 I'd have to buy a second safari as my daily, and slowly do the conversion as money permits on this, not that it worries me too much if I put the reg on hold for 3mths

A v8 conversion will set you back a shitload more than 5k! you got motor, adapter, engine mounts wiring etc etc etc list goes on.....it all depends weather you can do it yourself or not.....even then you'd be pushing it

The problem is, even though its a Nissan motor, the TD42 is still a lot of work in my GU. Needs pretty much the same. Motor, box, engine mount, accelerator pedal, radiator, cross member etc. Not so bad if the 4.2 GU was common here, but wreckers etc are asking big $$$ for anything from these

Sounds like GGy Motors has the complete setup Dave, so grab the lot (everything you need to do the swap) and make it happen! You'll have a sweet shorty GU with a decent power-plant for less than the price of a GU wagon. Go on, you know you want to!

It goes real good, driven it myself....infact goes real well better than i thought.....shame you guys dont live in welly because you can drive before you buy

i know they are designed to have turbos but in some cases the turbos can prematurely wear certain engine components. has it had any turbo work done to it??
