Yer it certainly is big horsepower terrain, but the little 3rz will be fine for me, it drove most stuff in there, and drove all the stuff the v8's got stuck in, I'd rather spend my $$ on traction aids rather than more hp on open diffs

are yes but is that due to the 40's and ground clearance ? ..only places i got stuck were when i had no wheels on the ground and i doubt a front locker would have helped when both front wheels were spinning and touching nothing but air
would have been good to stick 33"s on your truck and seen how it went
anyways the mud fulla's in the states use blown cammed meth breathing monsta v8's for there mud bogging ..and there american so hey cant be wrong

Your missing the point, my jalopy is a rockcrawler, not a mudbogger, like I said, I'd rather spend money on traction aids,ie 40" tires, good suspension, lockers, all the bits needed for rockcrawling, than on horsepower, you can have all the hp in the world, do ya no good if ya have no traction.
If I wanted to build something to go well in the mud, it wouldn't look like what I have built. Muddy tracks and bogs are not my trucks "home turf", but it still goes well enough in them to do the job, even with only 150 hp, like I said, if a lack of power ever pisses me off, then I'll do something about it....until then CATCH UP!!

Re: Waikato Cheerleaders Weekend Out (Bacon for breakfast)
lol trev
my point was .. take out everything else .. was it only the 40's making the differerance in the mud
i agree your just cruzing though the mud because you "can"
the though was more... could you just slam 40's on a surf/ hilux and do the same job ... the americans put bigger and bigger tyres on ther trucks every year for that exact thing
i know your truck is well setup
i know you have blingy bits for africa
i know you can definatly drive well
this ant a pissing contest im just looking at wethier the 40's made the biggest differance in the situation
like you said .. if youve got no traction the bigger motor makes no differance and there was nothing even remotly comparable there with a v8 in it to make the jusgement call that more power in that situation wouldnt have made it a even better truck
if you wanna talk rock crawling .. look at king of hammers' most of them are fairly high hp trucks and they crawl over some fucken amazing shit
the whole what motor is best arguement is something that is a personal preferance and suited to different driving styles
and without a exact replica of your truck with more hp .. its impossible to say wethier it would give you advantage compeating against only your own truck

Re: Waikato Cheerleaders Weekend Out (Bacon for breakfast)
I dont think the 40's are the only thing that gets it through, stick the 40's on a std surf, and it will still get stuck, open diffs bring teh suk
Its everything working together that makes mine as capable as it is, shaved diffs, nothing hanging down like ubolt plates etc, lockers, and of course big tyres, all the things you need for crawling
Dont be thinking that KOH is rock crawling, far from it, its a race, with the majority of it high speed desert racing, dotted with rock racing. Most of the purpose built KOH trucks have poor crawling speed in relation to "normal" crawlers, KOH trucks tend to be "thrown" at the rocks rather than crawl them. Hence the carnage!
Check out the specs on the TF cases (atlas) they use, most are 2:1's rather than 5:1's used for crawling, this gives them the speed needed, but hurts their crawl ratio. Most competitive rock crawling in the US has been "rock racing" for some time now.

Re: Waikato Cheerleaders Weekend Out (Bacon for breakfast)
welll i guess for rocks with that 230:1 ratio of yours your better off to have somepeddles
when your ratio is that low for moving the engine really dont matter
and open diffs really do bring the suk .... and hilux lsd's are open difs :d
good thing i have at least one locker

Re: Waikato Cheerleaders Weekend Out (Bacon for breakfast)
might go over again after i get my front locker in to see if i can get up that slippy bit that you drove that i couldnt quite get up... i think the extra drive in the front would have seen me up and over that...maybe
but a lot of it comes down to the person sitting in the seat ,how well they can drive different situations(tJaff drives very well)and how familiar they are with the vehicle and what it can do, like if someone else (say me for instance) hopped into the jallopy and tried to drive it would probably not go half as far.
so to sum up
driver skill+lockers+primo set up+40's= drive stuff and not get stuck
so im going to get both ends locked up so i have at least one of the above

Agree completely.
After looking at the Vids I think that what made the truck capable was
1 40 inch tyres and shaved diffs= ground clearance
2 suspension travel
3 lockers
4 Jafa = sees the right line and uses power and gearing to advantage
5 power and gearing
What would make it go better in this terrain would be 40 inch mud tyres.
What would make it worse ? A V8 Why ? Because it would put too much weight over front Axle and alter the balance of the truck.
Cheers Richard

you think that 20 kgs will do that richard ?
i think thats a really big call to make based on 20-30 kgs
this ant a 400 kg chev were talking about

1uzfe dressed engine weight minux gearbox 175kg
3rz dressed weight minus gearbox 181kg
the poor old torqueless 1uz even makes more at a 1000 rpm that the 5l and more than a 1kz at there rated rpm
The US spec engines made 250 horsepower @ 5600 rpm and 260 lbs ft (405.6 N·m) of torque at 4400 rpm (see graph below). I suspect the Japanese engine’s output has a similar profile. Note how torque is above 200 lb ft from as little as 1000 rpm…
3rz dressed weight minus gearbox 181kg
The Toyota RZ engine family is a straight-4 piston engine series. The RZ series uses a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It has MFI fuel injection, 4 valves per cylinder and features forged steel connecting rods.
The 3RZ-FE is a 2.7 L (2693 cc) I4 version built in Japan. Bore is 95 mm and stroke is 95 mm. Output is 150 hp (112 kW) at 4800 RPM with 177 ft·lbf (240 N·m) of torque at 4000 RPM.
The 5L-E is a 3.0 L (2986 cc) EFI version of the 5L engine. It is the latest member of the L family. It has a bore of 99.5 mm and stroke of 96 mm, with a compression ratio of 22.2:1. Output is 96.5 hp (72 kW) at 4000 RPM with 141.6 ft·lb (192 N·m) of torque at 2400 RPM
The 1KZ-TE is a 3.0 L (2982 cc), 4 cylinders, SOHC, 2 valves per cylinder turbo diesel engine. Bore is 96 mm and stroke is 103 mm, with a compression ratio of 21.2:1. Maximum output is 130 hp (97 kW) @ 3600 rpm with maximum torque of 29.3 kgf·m (287 N·m) @ 2000 rpm. Redline is 4400 rpm. First produced in 1993, it is still used in new model vehicles today. 1KZ-TE also adopt the electronically controlled fuel injection, ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System - intelligent) technology which is similar in basic construction to a modern gasoline injector, although utilizing considerably higher injection pressures, making it a very efficient engine

See it will go better with a V8 in it, It'll save 6 kg over the front axle and be better balanced

there are reasons his 4 banger is better in some ways .. but weight and power are not them

Re: Waikato Cheerleaders Weekend Out (Bacon for breakfast)
yeah if he puts a V8 in it he'll need bigger diffs, then he'll loose ground clearance so he'll need bigger tyres, then he'll need a bigger V8 to turn them. And then he'll need bigger diffs again and on it goes.
it seems to be a good compromise between power ,gearing and clearance but wouldn't it sound awsome with 4 more cylinders
