right ive got my tidy ln65 cab and chassis and i dont want a repeat of my last one
RUST AND LOTS OF IT
so i want to clean and paint everything while its still apart
ive tried hammerite but it peels off smooth bare steel
so i went to my local engineering shop and they wernt too helpfull
theres rust converters metal ready cleaner etch/normal primer 2k and a whole range of pore15
makes my head spin!!!!
the chassis is still good so im not sure weather its worth geting blasted
so what im after is product and method advice
thanks in advance
jeremy
p.s ive searched but havnt found what im looking for
painting advice wanted
Re: painting advice wanted
would reccomend por15 its a great product have used it on motox frames. paint the por15 on then apply your primer and top coat otherwise a good etch primer then primer and top coat
Re: painting advice wanted
I painted my underside of the body with Corrolis EP epoxy primer. It is a marine structure/ship paint. I used wet and dry sandpaper first and then thoroughly washed and degreased before painting. Has worked well for last 3 years.
Every time I put another dent in the panels and crack off the factory paint I get the orbital sander with 60 grit and sand of all the cracked paint and use the epoxy on it. it is very tough and also less likely to crack than the factory paint.
looks hideous and gloopy brown colour but I dont care..
with any paint it is critical you really roughen the surface up with corse sandpaper or it just doesnt stick well

if you are going to use por you will need to paint the colour while its tacky as the paint wont stick to it

por15 has a Tiecoat primer to use after its gone hard, sanding the por15 works also, but laying on Tiecoat is a lot easier

yea i see in the por 15 range they do a metal ready paint and a super hard chassis coat top cote
$100 per litre tho
so will a wire brush on a angle grinder do to remove the sureface rust dirt ect?
then super etch primer or rust converter?
thanks guys

Paint is all in the prep. If you want it be 100% then you need to bare metal it and start from scratch! If not then you'll need an etch primer of some description on the bare metal then a primer then top coat.
There are a heap of systems and some are pretty good. I've had POR 15 on wheel and diffs and it was good for a while but still chips and comes off.
On my chassis all I do is clean it up with sand paper / grinder / wire brush and then use a cold galv (zinc) primer and then top coat it with some enamal. I just toucj it up all the time as I've yet to fond something that will withstand everything.
On the next chassis I'm thinking about getting the whole thing dipped then dipped in epoxy then coated with ute deck liner or powercoat. The problem is then that if you do damage it how to you repair it.
Zinc paint seems to be an easy cost effective way of keeping the rust at bay on chassis ayway and easy to repair. I nomally use CRC Zinc-it first and then black zinc over the top. Then a black gloss enamel as it is easy to clen.

Darin is right, good prep is the key, I sandblasted my chassis then por15, then topcoat, my topcoat has worn of in some areas, but the por15 is good. I did the same with my diffs, and its come off in a few places, hardly surprising considering the beating it gets. lasts better than powdercoating has on my rims, that crapped out fairly early, particularly on edges.
1 litre of por15 goes a long way.
I dont think anything will last forever on a 4x4, but por15 gets my vote. I dont rate the crc zinc it range either, I had that get rubbed of by bushes real easy.

1990 surf 350 chevy jacked up and currently under construction again
Re: painting advice wanted
PA10 used to be the shit until they changed their recipie some time ago, now we wont use it at work as it doesnt seem to be as good as others out there (that it used to beat).
Re: painting advice wanted
heath what do ya use in stead of pa10
ive just cleaned the chassis up and its alot beter than i first thought
no pitting at all and very minnor surface rust where paint was missing
out work ute (sheep shagga) is in worse condition
hows this sound
full clean, sand down rusty bits, chemical clean, rust converter on bits i cant reach, sand evrything to ruff up the surface, etch primer, por15, body under seal?

Sorry couldnt tell ya, not my job anymore but last time I tried to grab some for home I was told they dont use it anymore. They use a two pot primer.
