Changing ratio with diffs & sync gone

Post by Gaz_n_Paj »

I'm now on the third Paj and unfortunatley this one is petrol, however not a 'normal' one if you will.

Anyhow being petrol it has the aweful 4875 (from memory) diff ratios, and as road driving is completely over-rated, I'd love to have something a lot more low geared like my last 2 diesel 5285's. Is it possible and would it be cheaper to swap the 2 diffs out or to put crawlers in?

The third and fourth I think sync are shafted. Has anyone done these in theirs to know the repair cost? I've been advised to just replace gearbox, but then don't know what's wrong with that one either..

Paj = 91 Gen2, SWB

Cheers in advance

Yes, it is an easy swap to the 5.29's but just a bit time consuming, especially doing the front diff. IF doing the swap, the 5.29 does not come in the bigger 8 inch front diff so to do the swap you need the front driveshaft as well as its longer. There is no diff lock available for the 5.29 front diff as they are only in 7.25 inch, not the more common 8 inch.

There is a 5.29 with locker for sale on trade me at the moment too. It won't make a huge difference but you should notice it most on road, its about 10%.

Low transfer gears are probably closer to $1500 + fitting.

Can't comment on the gearbox.

Thanks for that Glen. Are you saying that in low range going down a hill in say 1st gear, there won't be any difference between the 5289 and 4875? - or just not enough worth worrying about?

Oh yes, it will definately make a difference, weather you will notice it or not...?

I did a swap from 4.636 to 4.9 on mine when I went to 33's and that was mostly to get its on road spark back which is where i noticed it. 9% difference at 100km/h is alot more noticeable than 9% at 10km/h.

They do tend to run away a bit on a downhill, but thats what brakes are for :D

Because of the low range gearing I won't be going any bigger tyre size without getting some transfer case reduction gears.

I replaced the 2nd and 3rd sychros in my Paj. I cant remember the total bill but was close to $700 that was mates rates to. I remember thinking afterwards "I should have just got another gearbox" but your right in saying there is a risk of getting a bad box. The actual synchros were either $60 or $70 each.
