Fitting Auto Trans Cooler to 80 Series Landcruiser

Post by suzolla »

Hi,
Going to fit a trans cooler before the radiator cooler, have read the various opinions on previous discussions. Will also put temp gauge on return to trans to monitor temp.
Can anyone tell me which sides the in and out are on the radiator cooler.

Thanks
Tim

I've put on on mine, i can't remember which way round, i just got someone to start the engine for a split second to work out the hoses.

Also have a fitting soldered into the trans pan with a mech. oil temp sender in it. Trans runs at between 40 and 80 degrees C most of the time, tran's temp light comes on at 120 degrees.

Trans temp light sender is getting its reading from the core oil flow, aftermarket sender is getting reading from the oil in the pan after it has been through the system including the coolers i believe.

I found that had to leave factory cooler in the system also, as with just the aftermarket cooler it ran hotter and got hotter more quickly, but with the two of them working in series, there is a marked improvement.

Its a massive cooler as well. Attached it to the grille, rather than the radiator, figured better airflow around the cooler????

Take care that your cooler is large enough as most aftermarket ones are smaller than the factory cooler on the bottom of the radiator and cause your trans to run hotter rather than cooler. I put 1 on mine but used factory one as well then when I replaced radiator with new one (used manual 1 as cheaper so couldn't use factory cooler aswell) the trans started overheating when I was towing. I then went searching for a decent sized cooler which solved the problem.
cheers
