What did your total cost for your GPS set come to Richard?

Mine is at the top end of the Garmin GPSs so the whole setup cost me $1000 . The Garmin 760 nuvi cost $550 but this model also is like an Ipod and plays MP3 music, it is also FM radio and has Bluetooth for hands free cell phone. It came with the 2009 street maps of NZ. It is also widescreen
You can buy a cheaper Garmin without the bells and whistles for about half that. Only Garmin GPSs will take the NZ topo maps.
I purchased an entire Package of the Topo maps Of NZ for my PC as well as the GPS with all the Satelite and Aerials for $450.
You Can just buy the GPS ones for about $230.

I am heading into the Alexander this weekend to see if we can drive to the old powerhouse and battery so with the maps we will hopefully find it. We are also looking for a route from Waiuta to the Snowy river rd.

i love driving with music i think driving with rythem makes you a smoother more fluid driver ... dunno if that applys to 4w4ing though :F

Have you been talking to Janet Kevin because what you are saying is all true. Every thing I have is wound up and I have a good computor that can transfer 78s into MP3 and I have just loaded some Hank Williams onto the Garmin.(WHO ?) Your brother John would probably enjoy a ride in the lux . He would be able to sing his heart out with the hits of the sixties.

It is nice to be wise from age and proud of it.

Thanks Richrad, I was looking at updating my own garmin76s to a nwer model and was quoted just over $1K for the updated similar verion. I will have to have a good gander at yours oneday, looks a better unit then what I was looking at in terms of a bigger viewable screen.

Good weekend on the coast.

I don't know why I didn't have GPS ages ago. Listened to my old country music on the road. Arrived at Reefton in the dark, went to favorites on the GPS and it gave me directions to my digs.

Our mission for the weekend was to get to the Battery and the powerhouse in the Alexander Valley. With the aid of the GPS Paul Delis and myself managed to drive right up to it. The powerhouse has a big chimney and is about 6 metres long and has concrete and brick walls about 2 metres high with about 4 furnaces's underneath to fire the the boiler and produce the steam to run the operation.

A very good valley drive taking about 4 hours return. Some big boulders in the Alexander River but worth the effort.

I don't have any photos to prove it as my Janet had the camera and didn't go.

I don't do any programming of 4 wheel drive tracks at all. Going into the Alexander because there is no track, a person just has to drive where it is possible to drive . All I do is see where I am in relation to the valley on the topo map and then when I can see that I am getting close to the destination zoom in to the max and then I know exactly where I am on the map in relation to the battery and powerhouse that is drawn on the topo maps.

What are you using?

I might be able to suggest a faster procedure

I have to program tracks for work as the definition on the map software isn't high enough, just aiming for somewhere is easy

I have,

TopoMap v 1 (No GPS Support) - I use this for looking for tracks
MapSource WorldMap - Had it since I bought my first Garmin about 10 years ago
MapSource NZ with autoroute etc (Last Years) - Used for work, getting places and plotting tracks
Tumonz V3.0 - Used for checking property boundaries, getting landlord info etc.
Google Earth (Handy for distances and getting an idea of the profiles as the crow flies)
Radio Mobile, Which I used for 3D terrain mapping and detailed path profiling and coverage mapping.

So a few...

When I have spare cash for yet another program I will be speaking to you Brent.

Over easter Paul Delis and myself got to the powerhouse in the Alexander on the Westcoast. No one has been in there for over 10 years and we managed to drive right up and with the aid of my new Garmin 760 find it.

This is the screen of the GPS with no programming required.

The powerhouse and battery and walking track are highlighted. The gps then shows my position as we head up the valley and a pointer shows which direction to head

The start of the track is the first turn to the left after the Staircase on the Snowy River Rd. I understand John Randle is heading in at Anzac . The End is 42degees 19.119south and 171-56.754 East.

Thanks Richard, just entered them into the GPS for future reference. I thought JR was heading into the Chasm, he could be doing this as another day trip. i am off to Lake daniels with Nth Canty club ANZAC and in to the chasm on Queens birthday and again in July, but in reverse, ie from the Grey. I have done it once befroe this way with JR.

I don't really know much about the history but understand the Alexander Gold mine was in operation in the early 1900s and through the Great depression of the 1930s

Was a good trip with Richard, well recommend people have a go up there, would be good to mark a track prpoerly so more people could get in and use it, Richard and I basically pushed our way through the scrub, would recomend taking a chain saw to cut some small trees and clear the track

Just had a change around on the dash as I nearly rolled the hilux because the GPS on the windscreen created a blind spot. With 6 gauges ,GPS, PRS, CB I am running out of room to fit anything else.

What the hell is it??

looks kinda like a buick gsx with a roof chop and the front window raked back (cheaper than custom glass)... but the gsx is a 70's car

my fathers right into hot rods richard so i was bought up modding cars
personally im not a fan of guages .. i like lights
ive set my truck up so it limits when it gets to hot and kills the engine when oil pressure gets to low (not sure if thats a good thing yet .. but its saved my engine once sofar)

have you considered making a mk3 cortina center comsole style guage set ? to keep yourself nice and clear .. with maybe a row of red lights to give fair warning ?

What the hell is it??

I called it "Barker 272 special" It was my own design using sheet metal and different body parts and built on a Ford Customline chasis and the 272 motor that had 4 twin throat carbs ,extractors, planed heads and 3 quarter race cam. When pushed it would do 8 mpg but in those days fuel was cheap.

OUR MOTTO WAS " V8s NEVER LATE, 6 IN LINE A WASTE OF TIME"

The big mistake I made was overtaking a white Fiat 1500 that happened to be a police car at 170kph. He told the judge he chased me for 5 ks at over 140kph and then charged me with driving at a dangerous speed and you can guess the outcome.

Today I have a Honda Euro capable of well over 200kph but as soon as it reaches 103 I flick it onto cruise control so I don't speed at all.
