Hi,
I want to do an injector clean on my 2L surf.
What are peoples experience with insitu cleaning or removing them to be cleaned.
On the net comments seem to be that the cleaners that you put in the tank with fuel are okay to keep them clean but not to clean dirty ones.
There seems to be some products which you use as a 50 / 50 mix with diesel in a separate bottle and run this through the injectors. Has anyone done this themselves, what product did you use, was there an improvement.
I guess this is a bit like the commercial flushing companies.
Has anyone removed their injectors and had them cleaned or cleaned the injectors themselves.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tim
Diesel Injector Cleaning Whats Best ??
Re: Diesel Injector Cleaning Whats Best ??
When I did my last oil change, I did the fuel and air filter as well. I put the industrial grade injector cleaner (can't buy on shelf, have a mate that I get it off) in the fuel filter as priming fluid. I then fired the diesel which means the pure cleaner goes through then injectors first. Cleaned them out real well, minimal balck shit coming out now and better response from the throttle. I also put algaecide in the fuel regularly.

Depending on who you talk to and who you believe, this is the low down:
To clean injectors properly they need to be removed from the vehicle.
Why??
Because the deposits that form in the combustion chambers of diesel engines are non-combustable, i.e they do not/cannot be burned. Thays why they survive the combustions process to remain and coat the inside of the combustion chambers. Its also why the engine oil on light diesels need to be changed so regularly.(Note: this is different to in a Petrol engine, where most deposits are volitile and can be burned out with hot running )
The injector tips(often glass) which protrude into the combustion chamber, or pre-combustion chamber get coated in these deposits. The build up of these deposits on the injector tip affects the spray pattern produced by the injector. The spray pattern is a critical part of injector opperation.
Also critical to the spray pattern of the injector is the injector burst pressure. Both the spray pattern and burst pressure are the main components in the correct atomisation of the fuel as it is injected into the combustion chamber.
Injector cleaner cleans out the internal workings of the injectors to a certain extent, but is not very effective for removing the deposits from the outside of the injector tips.
For the small amount it costs to get injectors serviced ($60 an injector for a 2L from memory), its worth it.
Not only will you get either new, or cleaned tips, they will also reset the injectors to the correct burst pressure, which means you will get correct atomisation of the fuel, more power and less smoke (or, seeing as its now less smokey, you can turn the fuel up a bit and get a tad more power with probably still less smoke than before the injector service
).

In the above link they are talking ten gallons of gas thats US gallons not imperial gallons so 1 us Gallon =3.75 liters in NZ.
So we would the 3oz of acetone to 37.5 liters of gas/diesel.
I inadvertanly put $20.oo of gas into my mistral which had 3/4 tank of diesel back when reg was worth $1.50 a liter it went well n pulled like a school boy i was told the pump would leek as the gas would dry out the seals it didnt happin n i traded it 11 months later.

Re: Diesel Injector Cleaning Whats Best ??
I have always found that the so called injector cleaners are more of a preventative measure rather than a a proper fix for something already clogged, don't get me wrong I used to use a dose of Moreys every third tank fill myself but for a proper fix they need to go to a proper service center and at the same time also get the pump recalibrated or at least checked. Diesel injection is a specialist field and beyond the scope of a home workshop. The last time I had my pump serviced on the Terrano and nozzles replaced it cost me about $450. Erosion of the holes in the injector nozzles is quite a common problem and no amount of injector cleaner is going to fix that.
