farm rego

My neighbour's got a Samurai that we found for them to use for trundling round the farm so they wouldn't be carting their kids on the 4wheelers. Problem is, this truck's too tidy to let the rego die.

By the same token, it never leaves the farm other than to run the kids 5km up the road to the local school and back. they don't want to keep spending money on getting a wof and rego every 6 months.

What is farm rego, and can it apply to this? I had a nosey thru the LTSA website, but as usual, i couldn't find anything useful there, bar some very vague guidelines about ATV's (strangely enough, according to those guidelines, i could probably get away with registering it as an ATV )

Or should i just put the rego on hold and tell them not to get caught?

Next time its due for Reg you just change the class to A or B class

Exempt Class B
Exempt Class B vehicles may be exempt from the payment of some levies.

Exempt Class B vehicles are:

Farm vehicles

A motor vehicle (not a trailer) designed for agricultural operations and used on a road solely for agricultural operations, including mobile or movable huts, galleys, and similar motor vehicles used on a road solely in connection with such operations. (Not including a vehicle designed for cartage or spreading of lime or fertiliser when used on the road for cartage or a weed sprayer on a truck chassis)

A motor vehicle (not a trailer) owned by a farmer and only used on the road to go from one part of the farm to another part of the same farm, or from one farm to another farm owned or managed by the same person, for agricultural operations

A tractor or traction engine used on the road solely for agricultural operations; or if used mainly for agricultural operations and otherwise only in connection with road construction and maintenance

A tractor owned by a farmer used on a road only for
the owner's agricultural operations, and/or
the cartage of milk, cream, or whey to or from a dairy factory, and/or
cartage of any farm produce, implements, stock, or other farm requisites from one farm to another farm that is owned or managed by the same person or for a maximum round trip of 21 kilometres of public highway

A tractor that is designed and used partly for the purpose of loading lime or fertiliser into topdressing aircraft and partly for drawing a trailer that is designed and used exclusively for carrying aviation fuel in a permanently attached tank for use in topdressing aircraft, and for no other purpose and is not taken on any round trip of more than 21 kilometres of public highway.

cheers windsock, i had a look at that sheet, however the use this truck would get on the road is likely to take it past a police checkpoint spot (there's one there every 6 months or so), so i want to have some certainty about it

Mainly because it isn't a vehicle designed for ag purposes, and also because the guy's kids are tricky to explain away as farm produce...

Were the kids produced on the farm??

Basically if they are going to use it to run to school its a road vehicle, can't use it for that purpose under any other form of rego except passenger vehicle.

Decision needs to be made if it is going to be used just off road (in that case I'd go for reg on hold) or also for school drop offs (full rego)

In a very rural setting and small community you would prob get away with using it to go to the school, depends on the locals but to save the legal expenses (reg/wof) best idea is to use the other car for school runs, if that isn't viable then the wee zuk is prob a good option as a second road worthy vehicle. If its getting a hiding on the farm the last thing you want is it to come to grief on the way to school and cause some injury or harm even though it is unlikely.

haha...there's the problem, all the kids were produced in town...

I think i'll just get them to leave it on hold for now, it got put on the other day. It doesn't get thrashed at all, so the only damage is from his wife jack knifing the trailer into the back of it etc. She's not the brightest bulb in the box at the best of times

When the hold comes up for renewal i'll discuss it with them. Basically there's only so much i can control as to what they use it for, so long as i can get them to understand the laws then it's their fault if they get caught.


(come to think of it, duckshooting starts this weekend, i'm betting it'll probably get rolled/put into a dam by sunday. Normally they roll at least one 4wheeler...there's a good reason why you shouldn't drink and drive...)
