2 to 3 g depending on the truck. not too concerned about series probably a 2 or 2a. Swb preferably just trying to see whats out there really.

Would like a bit of nostalgia but to make it places in some shape or form. Prob not biggest modifier as limited budget and time (I am at uni).

Cheers for ya help guys. Think this sites great =)

yep, fatal comment there

club trialled old mans holden powered series landy for 10 years before I got my first SJ. If your a uni student and have fawk all cash, go the SJ, buy a standard(ish) Sj413, put some 30" MTs on it and play to your hearts content. Should be able to pick one up for $1500 throw $500 at it on tyres, towhooks and away you go. 2 weeks later you flag the rest of terms study books on a locker, scrape through end of year exams by 51%, get holiday job to pay for cage, winch, and ask whats next

No disrespect to the landy owners but buying an old series landy would be like buying a debt and it would be a constant hole in your pocket keeping the thing repaired and running.... rusty chassis, rusty firewall, breaking running gear....

i think you will be lucky to find a wof and rego sj413 worth buying for $1500. they seem to be going for good money as less and less road legal ones are around.

Thought you might say that about the land rovers, But I have found that the land rovers that do sell around the 2.5g mark mostly have new firewalls etc and swapped running gear/ recond. The reason I said land rover is there was one I really liked on trademe with LD28 motor nissan gearbox etc and roll cage but it sold before i could get to it. I am always on a look out for a sj but it seems so is everyone else IE they are starting to cost a bomb.

Cheers guys

Yep, as much as it pains me to say it as a past and present Land Rover owner, the statements above is pretty standard fare for older and average series trucks these days. By stating series you are automatically opting for a truck older than 26 or so years. Back in the 70's and 80's when I could pick up a relatively newer one I had to spend money keeping them maintained - fence contracting paid for the fun though so no worries. These days they would be even worse unless you were lucky enough to pick one up that had a single owner for a long time that maintained to a relatively high level and hardly used it but then you usually gotta pay more than your budget unless you get lucky.

For my latest truck I bought on the basis of nostalgia tinged with the reality of having done it before, but I opted for buying a very early model coiler (1984 110 cab/chassis) for my current truck and although it is getting as old as I mentioned there were some vast improvements to be had over the older series - discs on the front, five speed, coil suspension etc, and it came from Inland Otago and had been well maintained single owner truck for quite a while before coming north. A very straightr truck (when I got it) but none the less, it is a constant drain on the wallet (as all 4WD's are no matter what breed if used as intended!)

I know exactly what Sadam is saying for sure. The steel in the older series is no different from the steel found in any other 26+ year old truck and is prone to giving out in critical places as that is where the steel was used, to support the aluminium body. Once it starts to rust, it is a WOF issue straight away.

For the money you are prepared to spend, I would suggest following Lilpigzuks advice and going the SJ way - getting out there is what it is all about (especially if you are going hard out at Uni, time away is critical yeah!) not spending all your spare time and cash lying on a garage floor looking up at the belly of a truck! However, I would say again, if you got real lucky and all your stars lined up and you were able to get a series truck in very good condition - go for it.

Where abouts are you? If in South Island, Southland and Inland Otago is a good place for relatively rust free trucks.
