Northland Winch Challenge 2009

Post by darinz »

Hi Guys
I can confirm the new date for the NWC. It will be 15th to 17th May. That is the third weekend so won't clash with duck shooting or mothers day!
We are holding it on a completely new property 15k west of Whangarei.
There is camping available (for the cost of the showers and toilets) onsite for everyone. We also have access to a woolshed, running hot water, power etc so should be a pretty well setup.

The basic format will be scrutineering on Friday night to basically whatever time people get there.
Racing all day Saturday, night stage(s) Saturday night and finish early afternoon Sunday.

Challenge and Club classes will be racing on exact same tracks so 4 point roll bar for Club class.

4x4 challenges membership required for all drivers and co-drivers and also logbooks essential.

Anyone interested drop me an email
darin.neeley@roostmortgages.co.nz

as I'd like to keep the entry fee as low as possible (like $150 or less) but it will depend on enough people being interested.

Good question. If affiliated via another club then Membership is $26 and at present this includes your logbook and then $6 per year.
Let me answer that question after this weekend as I'm talking to the Club class guys about some things that will have an impact on this.

Log books and membership not needed for club class but after the discussion and vote you need to join 4x4 challenges to be able to vote on rule changes etc. So when you join 4x4 Challenges ($26) you get a log for free anyway.

For those that need help with rollbars or anything else just ask here like we did for the Nor-West comp.

Hi Guys

I’m just trying to get a rough estimate of numbers.
I want to make the entry fee $150 but to have 4WD TV there then I need to ensure we will have enough guys coming or I’ll have to put the price up.
I think there are enough of you that have already said yes but can you please reply to this to as we have a meeting on Friday afternoon where all of this will be finalised.

The basic plan for the comp is as per last year. Eg;
Scrutineering on Friday night till late, race Saturday, night stage Sat night, race Sunday morning with Prize giving at 3pm.
There is camping onsite for everyone and this is included in the entry cost. The except is support crew where a $5 cost per person to cover showers toilets etc is required.
The race site is about 15km from Kamo on the Western side of Whangarei. A list of motels etc for those not hard enough to camp will be out next week with the full entry info.

Club and Challenge classes will race the same tracks at the same time like last year so Club will require 4 point rollbar (including a cross brace).
Log books required for Challenge class and suggested for club class. Remember to have a say about the rules you need to be a member and it only costs $6 per year.

NZFWDA membership is required for all competitors. If you aren’t a member then we can arrange it through 4x4 Challenges for an extra $28 (I think).

Lastly, there are no spectators and this is a real working farm we are racing on. Ie part of a dairy farm.
So if people want to come and watch they need to be either part of your team OR they need to marshal for at least ½ a day. There will be three competition sessions and marshalling for 1 of those will provide access to the whole event.

If you want to come and help set tracks then let me know as we will be doing that after Easter.
Due to the nature of this property, support trucks will be limited. More info with entry packs.
There will also be a supplementary rule about driver conduct and this will be policed HARD.

PS pass on to anyone who might be interested.

The sooner you entry the better we can plan.
So entry must be received by 1st of May or we will except late entries up until the day before at $200 instead of $150.

I can confirm that we have enough entries and it is happening and that 4WD TV will be coming to film it.

whats the story with cargo barriers? if all gear is stowed in a box which is a fixture do i still have to have a cargo barrier? this is the only thing i might get hung up on. ohh and the whole spare wheel thing, was that descision made? do you have to have a spare on the vehicle in the stage?

Darin is currently without internet access, but can get emails (you've got to love cellphone technology) so if you have any questions email him, address at the top of the page.

Ben the answers to your questions
Four club class have paid but there will probably be about ten if everyone who has indicated they are coming arrive.

Cargo barriers are not required if everything is in a box but they are recommended.

A spare the same size as fitted to the vehicle must be carried (see rule 16.9)

"The spare tyre must be of the same size as fitted to the vehicle and securely fastened behind the cargo barrier."

that is quoted from the rules on the 4x4 challenges site, It dosn't say you must carry a spare, it says the spare must be the same size as the rest... So a spare tire is not compulsory??, but if you do have one, it must be the same size as the rest, or am I reading it wrong?

bugger but okay.

what about the size of spare, is that flexible at all? i run a 35/12.5 creepy as a spare but the truck has 36" centipedes on it which only measure about 35.5", would that be ok or do i have to have exact size?

Your quite right as for the intent of the rule ,but at Norwest i made the call to allow trucks to drop there spare prior to starting a stage ,I have discussed this rule with members of the 4x4 challenges rules committe as the rules state the spare must be the same size and securely fastened but if you really want to get picky nowhere does it say you have to carry it while competeing :) ..Steve

PS Ben we allowed club class to run with a smaller spare as we were trying to keep the cost down for the competitors we thought as there was no road driving it was not a safety issue either ..

OK I'm back at home so have internet access again.

Spare tyres is pretty simple, it needs to be the same size and the intention is that you carry it with you. BUT as Club class is about guys getting into the sport and having a go, if you have an issue and either have a different spare or it just isn't possible to mount one then tell the specific details and I'll decide. It would be pretty hard to convince me that you don't have room for a spare tyre though!

The use of a locked box that is well secured has been acceptable in place of a cargo barrier and that is the precedent so will stand. But you will need to have everything extremely well secured.
I will add that I strongly recomend that you fit a cargo barrier as well.

Near enough is good enough. The point is that you must be able to fit it and continue racing.

Due to me being out of action and not reminding people to get their entries in (and me not sending them to a couple of people as well) the cut off will be extended untill next Friday 9th of May ie the week before the race. If you want to enter but aren't sure then call me. The goal is to get people racing and to keep it fair and safe, it isn't to have stupid rules making it hard for people.

Been thinking about it. The problem is that there is a lot of negativity around bigger tyres and I think that is one of the keys to an outlaw class, otherwise it is just a non road legal Challenge class and rather pointless.

I'd like to see an anything goes tough truck style event but this maybe a different thing all together and not really able to be held at the same time as a WC.
Not sure really but if you have ideas??????
Maybe a summer WC type event so that tyre ruts aren't as big an issue.
Maybe classes based on tyre size so unlimted, 37.5" (the size WC should be  ), 35.5 for a club class?
Just thinking out loud really.
The thing is it is only tyre size that is stopping you race you truck in Club class so fit some 35's and come up for a play.

One coment that has been made a lot about the outlaw class is there aren't really that many guys wanting to do it so until there are enough then no point catering for them. Chicken and egg really.
