I'm running a RE4RO3A in my GU, which from memory is the same as the GQ. Is there any reason I couldn't swap the bellhousing from this (RD28T) and bolt on the TD42 housing?
Is there anything else on the box that is likely to differ?
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Auto bellhousing swap?
Easy, but a little harsh on fuel according to someone that runs one
Needs to be a daily driver, so TD42T will be my first option, RB30 second, and 5.0 holden third

Not sure how I missed those posts, hopefully it hasn't sold yet
Re: Auto bellhousing swap?
Mr O, I don't suppose you could ask for a bit more info on what GU they are converting down there?
I spoke to Kit, who said they have a GQ non turbo motor/box, nothing about a GU when I asked
so may be sold already
He did mention they were putting a GQ 5spd in a GU next week, wanting to know what motor this runs at the moment. I've been told that the GQ box doesn't fit as its too short and the shifter end up under the dash. Going to talk to Kit next Friday as he should know by then if it will fit or not, but interested to see what motor this is running, didn't want to hassle Kit during work
Cheers,
Dave

You will need to check that the torque convertor is the same. It is quite likely that the RD28 torqueconvertor is different so you may need to change the input shaft of the auto.
This is what I had to do to get the VH45 tc to work with the Patrol (GQ) auto. All of the auto were RE4R03A's but there were some very big differences in input shaft length and tc depth. Remember that the TC's are different for different engine due to power curves etc.
Yes all RE4R03A'a have the same bolt pattern so you can interchange bellhousings. I have VH45 Bellhousing up to GQ auto with VH45 input shaft, GQ gearset and VH frictions, and GQ transfer case. So it all combines but will probably need to be stripped and put back together with the relevant bits.
Or the RD uses the same TC and it will just bolt up with a bell housing change! Not sure!

Re: Auto bellhousing swap?
Thanks for the info Darin, rather hard trying to get specs on the different box setups, so will just assume I need to replace the whole box.
Spoke to a guy at the Hurunui trip today who has done a TD42T conversion on his Patrol, so will get a bit more info from him.
If all else fails, he has his old reconditioned 5spd from an RD28, which would put the RB30 back on the list.
Will spend the next few weeks looking at the options, then decide which to go for so I can put the reg on hold rather than pay to have it sitting in the shed

Re: Auto bellhousing swap?
RB30 turbo would still be a lot of fun I recon.

Have been in touch with a guy down south that has just put an RB25det in his GU shorty, he took it out for its first drive today and loves it.
