80 series factory rear locker issues

when I bought my 80 series, it had factory lockers front and rear, but the rear was not working.

I have decided to finally work out why it don't go , but am asking for everyones knowledge.

I have a manual (although loaned out at present), but I remember reading thru it and it never mentioned much about the electric lockers.

those of you who are familiar with them will know how they work.

my first question is.......

if I had my ear next to the motor on the rear diff and someone flicked the locker switch with the ignition on, should I be able to hear the motor engage and disengage, coz I've done this and never heard a thing.

what next
do they have their own fuse somewhere

Hi Skid, I seam to remember reading a thread on here about this. Think the common problem was a faulty solenoid and that the best option was to get an after market replacement solenoid.

could be many things!locker motors only get power to them momentarily(2 secs) to engage them,whether they engage or not!most probably the motors got water in it.ring me i`ll explain it easier than posting ere! and you wont get any bogus info that will lead you up the wrong path!!

i can hear both lockers when i engage them like how you said. not pickin on you BUT have you got your centre difflock on

my rear locker did the same, ended up having to replace the motor. i also found that if you use the lockers at less once a month, just so they keep moving as my front one was a little stuck with wot i would say was think/muddie oil. cleaned it out when i has replacing the front diff, all working well now.

ok, it seems i may have been hasty in my attempts to listen for motor noise

will wait for a time when the rain has stopped over the next week and make sure all the bells and whistles are on before checking for motor noise

I have had mine get water and shit in the locker motors and they jam and burn out, Once in the front now one in the back.!!! I bought a second hand front but cant find a rear one. Not cheep eather . I've now bought ARB's for the Hilux and will have a couple spares for the 80. I know this dosnt help fix yours, but ive looked at replacing the electric mtrs with maybe an air ram to fit the pin that goes into the diff head ????.

Its the Toyota RM183E maunal, all 70 series stuff, RJZ7x, PZJ7x, LJ7x, HZJ7x, FJ7x and Jerrys Cruiser Jnr
Theres a shitload of wireing stuff and diagrams, you might have to take a look to see if it relates much to the 80 series wireing?

SO you have trouble with the factory E locker.

Check www.1h8mud.com for threads about the operation of the E lockers.

You have to have the center diff locked and cnfirmation indication on the dash.
Only then will power go to the E locker motors.

Don't be fooled by the flashing lights on the dash telling you that they have not engaged as the indicator switches are known for getting dirty and not operating.
I find the easiest way is to put the T case in low as this will lock the center diff. Get the indicator on the dash up.

Leave the transmission in Neutral Jack up the rear wheels and then rotate one of them. As soon as the locker locks you will not be able to rotate the wheel any more as the rea axle will be locked and the front wheels are on the ground. Don't forget to chock the front wheels.

nup, haven't really found the time to venture outside into cold and rain, but weather is improving as we near summer.

got Sadams manual sitting on the bench and have had a little look at it but never really sat down and thoroughly gone through the locker section of it.

its annoying really, coz if it was the front one broken, then I wouldn't even care, but the rear one is the one you want to use and it don't go, dammit.

i was standing in the door. flick the switch and i can hear the rear motor spin over the a small clik which i think is the lock ring hitting the end of it travel. the front is the same.

i have the manual the 70 and 80 cruisers and if you read up on it its easy to put in out.

pg 202 shows the lay out. there is a cover on the actuator which has two bolts holding it in place, if you remove this you will see the actuator shaft. if you lock the rear this shaft should slide in. if it dosent move try by hand, it should slide with a little force, you may have to jackrear end up so you can spin wheels by hand just incase the lock needs to turn to engage.

UPDATE TIME


its been 7 months and Pedro has finished the trolley, thrashed the trolley, rolled the trolley, broke the trolley and even found a new navi for the trolley.



in the meantime, Skid has actually been out in the 80 bus and been using it off road.

faaaark it climbs awesome and it climbs even better with the front locker engaged.

imagine how good it would climb if the rear locker was going as well.

so its time to pull my finger out and get back to where this thread was 7 months ago and see if I can get the damned thing going.

You know ya gonna get that call Pedro, coz you were silly enough to offer

I will let you fix the rally truck that we trashed first though.


this is gonna only cause me grief, I can see it now.

more traction will get me in more places and then it will be harder to get back.
