td05-td42 & tuning to go
Finally its in. started mon night after work and finished last night. so far ive hooked in the boost tap and turned standard boost(6psi) up to 13psi. still running standard fuel, have to get a few different opinions on how much boost and how much extra fuel. boost gauge and pyro hooked up and running, which hasnt gone over 500deg cel yet. best thing so far is the noise its awesome! how do i turn fuel up and how much do i start adjusting it by? will get some pics up on my build page asap. also should mention that at the mo im just running a 3inch dump pipe and some 3inch flexi from that straight down and dumping.

On the back of the pump is screw that has a cap over it and a 10mm lock nut. Back the lock nut off and then you can turn the screw in to increase the fuel. Do it about 1/4 of a turn at a time. I would imagine you'll end doing about 1 to 1.5 turns but you will have to then undo the screw in the top to adjust it to get the idle right. (the more you increase the fuel the faster it will idle so you need to reset the idle) This is the tricky part as you'll probably have to pull the bit that the cable joins to off the pump to get it right. It is spring loaded and can be a real PIA to get in back together and set right. You may not have to do this but I ran out of idle adjustment.
If you have a look and play around you'll be able tofigure out what bit I'm talking about and if you can't figure it out then you shouldn't be playing with these bits!!!!

Max egt's are really up to who you talk to.
But 700*C and your engine has about 30 seconds of life.
600*C if fairly safe for short spurts but not really recomended for long periods of time.
550 seems to be a nice safe long term level but you will find a lot of tuners are keeping them well below 500.
I use to run mine at 550 but that was because I couldn't get anymore fuel into it not because of choice.
One thing to be careful of is if you have a manual,it is possible to see extreme egt's at low revs and high load. An auto won't do this as the revs get up so much quicker.

Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
Cheers guys as it is at the mo running 13psi and standard fuel its about 490 max so hopefully will aim for 530ish egt. what about boost whats safe? for long life.
Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
Ive been running 18lb for every day driving and wind it up to around 22-25lb when doing comps for a couple of years without problems, but in saying that it is intercooled. What year and kms is your motor as the earlier ones will take more ,i dont know if its a fact but was told by my turbo guy that non intercooled pre 1993 were good for 16lb and 93 on were around the 12lb but alot depends on how much fuel your putting into it ,if you want to be sure get hold of Arron at Rotorua turbo & diesel hes a real guru when it comes to Nissan turbos ,If you want me to i can pm you his ph no ..Steve
Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
I ran 20psi all day everyday in mine for about 2 years before I pulled it out and out the 8 in. It is now back running NA and still hasn't missed a beat.
That was intercooled though.

Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
Yea mines a 1991 so should be the stronger one. am planning to intercool next with a water to air of the subaru type. i hear they work well. but for now... think ill aim around 14psi and 530ish egts see how that goes. looking for intercooler in a couple weeks time. will have to sort air filter box also just using pod filter at the mo, what are you guys using for this- part numbers if applicable would be good.
cheers Jared

Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
Sorry mate cant help with part no,s etc mines all custom built ,
Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
well whats it made from and what air filter does it use?
Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
Easiest bolt-in option is to get filter housing from RD28-T GQ / GU or ZD30 GU as you'll be hard pressed to find one from a TD42-T. I've got a TD42-T in mine and it bolts in without any dramas, but the filter size can be a bit restrictive if you're running a fair amount of boost and fuel. TD42-T filters fit housings from all those engines.
Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
At the moment its a alloy cyl shape housing with a pod type filter but with the fuel/boost etc im putting into it i find its a bit restictive,so after the Northland WC ill be changeing it to a Donaldson truck type filter box and change the snorkle from a 3" to a 4" ..steve

Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
i heard that the subaru intercoolers dont have enough flow for the big 6 cylinder diesel?? do they run well?? i might have to go this way i think.

Re: td05-td42 & tuning to go
Plenty have used the Subaru I/C without any problem so I wouldn't worry about that. Think of it this way, 2.0l at 7000rpm vs 4.2l at 4200rpm. Very rougly 14,000 vs 17,640. So as a comparison the required air flow isn't that much different. The calcs I've used don't mean anything technical, it is just a way of comparing things.
What I did was got a 6" donaldson housing and used a K&N filter inside as the Donaldson housing was OK but their filters were way restrictive! (no coments about all the other crap about filter type etc) I also had to remove the water seperator in the filter as that was the biggest restricter. Ended up with a very good filter housing with mounts etc that suited the application.
