J20 motor in a Vitara or Escudo

most of the 2.0 escudo's of the shape posted above will be the h20 motor , the 2.0 v6 model as that was the domestic engine for japan .

J20's can be found in the grand vitara , in the 2.0 size as the v6 in these was 2.5 litres .

Yep, I'm looking for a 4 cylinder 2.0 in the original Vitara 4 door shape. Someone must've done it. Classic lines and a great motor.

You will not find one in the original shape . If you are up to a bit of work the J20 has the same gearbox bolt pattern as the g16 . be a bit of work getting the clutch etc sorted and the engine mounts would need changing . May be best just to get a complete engine and box combination .

Being picky I would call it a second gen escudo . They have a slightly wider chassis to take the v6 etc and have the body kit on them .

That 4 cyl one is a rear best but would be a good car , never much liked the v6 as the power is not much more than the 4 cyl and there is a bit of a weight difference . My gen 2 drove nicely enough on the road too , mind you it had the diesel in teh front so was even heavier than the v6 .

One thing with what you are calling a "second gen" is that they can only take a 16 inch rim I think, to cover large front brakes, still drums at the rear. So if you already have a stock of 15 in mud tyres that's a bit of a pain.

These j20 motors must be the coolest thing. The 4-speed auto is worth a good look at for off-roading too.
Was thinking the SWB would be a good choice for my next 4x4 vehicle.

Also not wonting to go V6
So what ulse is different from the previous model that I have. Because I was going to swap over some of the existing mods to the new vehicle.

Have these got the Grand Vitara trailing arm rear suspension?

Was going to do some transfer case reduction gears to the Escudo. Will these swap over to the “ second generation” vehicle?

Heard all kinds of rumors on the t/case fitting and since I have never done it will not say one way or the other for sure , but some do i think .

I know the rear trailing are the same from a gen 2 lwb to a swb gen one as I have had them side by side .
I think the rear changed to 4 links in the grand vit as you indicate . Well my 02 has it and the gen 2 lwb I pulled the rear arms out of did not .

I think the front a arms are different on a gen 1 to 2 , due to the wider chassis . I the a arms are shorter . I wonder if gen 1 arms could go on the gen 2 to widen it ?Need to get a definitive answer on the differences of the front end from someone

The 2.0L 4 cyl J20 engine was a standard fit in the original Vitara shape, but very rare as they only came out from about 1997. The body is identical to the V6 5Dr and has the longer engine bay of the V6 also.

Diff gearing is slightly different to the 1600s but many components are identical.

Steering boss is different, so a 1600 boss-kit won't fit if you're putting on an aftermarket wheel.

Comment about 16" wheels is correct. The only way to get around this is to fit different brakes (because none of us would attack the calipers with a grinder to make the 15" wheels fit, and then paint the shiny bits!)

To tell the 4cyl from the V6, check the ditinctive front grill and the rear door badge, which reads only '2.0', whereas the V6 reads '2.0' above the 'V6' logo.
