Supercharged Mu 4JB1 Diesel

Post by MuGuy »

Earlier this year the turbo in my MU finally gave up (started making that horrible Screeching sound) so i've decided to supercharge it.

The main reason for supercharging it is that my MU has no power down low.
Especially on the beach trying to turn my 33x12.5.15's.

I've Got a Toyota SC-14 Supercharger from the older MR2s, it has a 1440cc capacity (or 85 cubic inches). The supercharger also as a self contained oil system so its nice and clean.

I've also changed my oil filter mount to the larger 4JB2 style with the filter facing out the bottom and the larger oil cooler.

I've mounted the Supercharger Where my aircon pump used to be and have purchased a longer Vee belt to drive it and have manufactured an adapter bracket to attach it to the original aircon mounting points. the supercharger came with the original intake and exhaust(to intercooler) manifolds so i have been able to use both of these though the exhaust manifold is still awaiting further modification to link it up to the throttle body (valve) before going into the intake.

I have the intercooler off a Trooper on my truck, and want to cut a hole in the bonnet to allow airflow and room for a 10" intercooler fan, does anyone know what the rules are with reguards to making bonnet scoops? and cutting holes in bonnets?

The problems i've had so far are as follows:
- broken off some exhaust bolts, though hopefully i should be able to get a stud extractor onto them.
-What to do with the oil feeds from the turbo, but i blocked off the return to the sump, and welded up the pressure line, it will just put more oil through the vacuum pump in the back of the alternator.
-Water cooling lines from the turbo were just feed straight back to return.
- routing of the intake manifolds, they are still waiting on TiG welding up.
-I'm worried about excessive heat around the oil cooler from the exhaust so i've to some heat wrap for the exhaust which will hopefully solve that problem.
-The only other thing i'm worried about at the moment is what happens when i use my gears for braking, as the supercharger will still be turning forcing all the air against the valve prior to the intercooler. I figured that this could both be a good thing helping to slow the vehicle down by loading up the supercharger or a bad thing over pressurising the intake manifold. I'm thinking maybe use of an external wastegate or BOV may solve the problem (i'm open to ideas or comments here).
-I was worried about tuning for a start but after talking to a diesel servicing centre they advised me that no tuning would be needed as with a mechanical fuel pump, it just goes of the engine RPM, how far you have your foot to the floor and available pressure, so everything just sorts itself out (hopefully).

I'm about 4 weeks away from finishing i hope (subject to weather, work etc).
Will put some pix up closer to finishing time :)

Hope this has been an interesting read, feel free to comment or ask questions if you want to know more or have ideas.

those superchargers are positive displacement meaning on a diesel (which doesnt have a thottle) it should force in the same mass of air each rev regardless of rpm and accelerator. this means roughly same boost pressure (but doesnt take into account how the Volumetric efficiency changes with revs)
You wont need a blow off valve, they are only used to stop compressor surge on a turbo petrol vehicle with a 'blow through' throttle.
Just make sure you get the gearing right :) youll have to gear it up considerably.

Interesting project, i was looking at using an SC20 on my landcruiser but ended up using a turbo intead

Hey I was just curious to find out how you hooked up the new oil filter mount.the bighorn 4jb1 mount interfares with my 2.5" front pipe that was made for a 3.1 motor
Thanks,Rob

What size motor is the MJB1.

My 3 litre hilux is supercharged with the same one. I have the electro clutch on my one with a 5 rib belt. The pulley size is 110mm and to get enough boost I have a crankshaft pulley of 215mm.

I am producing 8lbs after the intercooler so this may help you work out the gearing needed for the boost you want.

I only run mine part time .One of the problems with running them full time is the engine is running too cold for a diesel when it is cruising.

They definately give more engine braking when shutting off through the increased compression.

You won't regret doing it. A friend of mine has just done it and he said it has moved him up another gear.

just occured to me, make sure your engine doesnt have a shut off butterfly in the inlet manifold (some diesles like a 12HT cruiser motor have them) they are a method of shutting off the engine when you turn off the key, some diesles must shut off the fuel instead.

Regarding the boost band

I have 3-4lbs at 700rpm

5-6lbs at 1000rpm

7-8 shortly after and then pretty constant

Some people use a timing belt to stop slippage in water.

My mate said he was up to 12lbs at 4000. I never rev mine over 3000 so don't know.

After owning and developing a couple of 2.8 isuzus, the 4jb1T is very easy to tune - and you can increase torque without too much trouble. My last one ran at 155hp and 340nm against 110 and 225nm standard, and was more powerful than a couple of clubmates 3.0 surfs

Main tuning points are advance pump timing, and increase diesel flow as they are often somewhat retarded standard. This will give an extra 500rpm usable top end power.

Then for increased torque, fit a 2.5" bigbore ex turbo, a clean breathing filter like K&N or Unifilter, and of course your snorkel. This opens up the breathing side of the motor and they can go very well. This brings the turbo in hard 500rpm earlier - mine would pull strongly from 1500rpm after these mods. I had no issues running at higher level of tune for about 100,000ks including a couple of hundred offroad tracks.

Strong motor and takes the tuning. Makes them very grunty esp in the lighter body.

Be aware the 4jb1Ts come out with different models of turbo. Some are (VI?) 58s, some have 74s and some have 87s. The 58s have from memory smaller impellors with different depth and pitch which doesn't give same low down torque. 87s good and 74s apparently best - according to my turbo specialist.

MY present truck has a 58 turbo and doesn't grunt as well as last one with 87. If yours lacks low down pull, check the turbo - could be the 58 - stamped on housing.
