Spring height??

Post by De-Ranged »

Just fitted some new Dobi +45mm coil springs to a Y60 swb safari and they had no lift over the standard spring
Can anyone tell me the standard length of the or lengths of any other brands

All depends on brand and spring rating as to what length you get. What part number were they?

Thats part of the issue the code on the spring and receipt matches a 2" lift but there is only 20-30mm in them over the standard spring that we removed (when fitted), and they are the same height when sitting free
I'm not certain about the original spring so I want someway to measure it, just in case they have been reset at some time...
The new spring maker also does a HD standard spring its left me wondering if they have been mixed up at the factory
I'm after info before I send them back to the distributer

Based on Coxsy's measurements I'm left wondering the springs match his top numbers and his are lifted 3" the standard front springs are that length!!

When I put my 2" rear springs in they were the same height as factory, the only difference was how much thicker the new (second hand) ones were...

Hope that helps....

As said, you can't go by length, there is more to it than that. Maybe measure from the centre of your hub to a certain point (maybe bottom of wheel arch) or distance from bottom of bumpstops to diff and get someone with a lift to give their measurement to compare?

Assuming they are both rated for the same weight...the new springs should be longer....if they arent they wont give you the lift you want....
Id send them back ASAP if i were you.

Get another brand....ive not heard anything good about Dobi ....ive got Maxitrac in mine & are fine .

I've run OME, EFS, TJM and Tough Dog on my Safari's and have gone back to my original Dobinsons, most brands have their bad stories, as I've only heard bad things about Maxitrac.
Where did you buy the coils? Have you contacted them? Are you sure the originals you removed were not aftermarket?

Thanks guys I understand the deal with springs, the strength is based on the length of the steel in the spring and dia of the steel I could even calculate spring rates :D ,(the new springs are definitly stiffer, more steel dia) but this dosn't tell me if the springs I have are lifted or not .... One of the other things that concerns me is the original springs looks to be too open like it has been cut and stretched ( would give you a stiffer lifted spring, but without the flex),this is an easy fix could any one tell me the number of coils in a standad spring ??
this is why I need a measure, some way to see if they are standard before I go sending the lifted ones back.

Its an anoying problem and I'm doing the job at no cost to get a newb into 4wdn and its sucking up way to much of my time

Right just thought I'd throw up the answer, and add a bit of cheap tech

Found out why the original springs were of similar height as the originals.... they wern't originals well not for the Y60 shorty they were Y60 Long WB springs they are about 2" taller so there's a cheap lift for anyone out there with a shorty

yeah actually have heard of guys doing similar things with rear pajero springs, but they dont get quite 2 inch lift. would the high roof lwb be higher again??

i run maxitrac springs in my swb had em in about 18months havent sagged, run ome shocks to go with, is a good combo.

That's what I've done, TJM 2"LWB lift on a shorty gives a good 3" lift with good flex and load carrying capability. Only problem is the front prances like a pony at speed 4wding over small bumps. Could be a problem for Reefton Challenge.
