otago, serpintine church sunday 24th may ?

trying to see whos interested in a trip into the serpintine on sunday the 24may (next weekend) would liked to have done it at the long weekend but im away.

This will be the 2nd last weekend that the road is open till after the winter.

needed standard recovery gear hooks etc and warm clothing could be pretty cold up there.

i'll be wanting to leave the mosgiel shell station at 8.30am i'll be there at around 8am

yeh thought there might be but its not quite as high as what the benger is out through there. hopefully shouldnt be too bad

Went up the Rock and Pillar the other weekend. We needed chains and didnt make the top. It will only be worse (or better ) now.

I wont be in, turns out i did more than just snap an axle.

I only have the one set off chains, would that be safe enough or would people rather recommend havin 2 sets ie all four wheels???

1 set is better than none, it is always good to all 4 covered though. i wont be taking chains as i dont have any that will fit,. but in saying that i am running mongrels. and worse comes to the worse on the road over i can just run a side in the water table if it gets too bad.


was talking to a mate that lives right at the turn off to the second half of the dunstan trail and he recond the snow that was round the house was gone by about lunch time which is at just over 400m above sea level.

talking to me parents at roxburgh sounds like the bulk of the bad weather has gone up the coast.

Aye, how did the trip pan out - the event I was helping run was canceled as it turned out so I could have come after all (had of organised stuff the night before).

Though looking at the weather the Lada with cheap SATs, only a single set of chains, and a dodgy tranny was probably best left at home anyway...

panned out pretty well, extremely wet and a fair amount of snow up high, i snapped the front drivers axle bout half way into the church so just jumped in one of the other trucks for the trip over. then run a bearing in the top end on me prado on the way home from deep stream. appart from that was an enjoyable day

That track getting worn. I was down that way two year ago and DOC had bulldozed all the tracks around there, Old man Range and Lammerlaw all flat and could do in 2wd. Gave up on central for that very reason. May have to get back down that way.

from lake onslow out to the serpentine church half of the track has been recut by greenfeilds (local farm syndicate) the boggy section that runs for about 2km is still there. the track that runs from linburn runs road to the serpentine hasn't been recut. couple of good holes and some good washouts, spent more time off the track than on it once we got up into the snow. the track that runs to the church from poolburn as far as im aware has allways been very easy to drive appart from when very wet.

as for the tracks on the old man as far as im aware these havent been recut for many years at least down the roxburgh end they havent been.
the track into gem lake from moa flat is being recut not sure how far through they are going to go with that though. they were almost to the tramcar hut at easter when i was in there for a look. im hoping that they leave the track to junction hut the way it is (washed out).

give me a yell if your coming down these ways at any stage AL.
be keen to go and hit a few of the tracks once they reopen after the winter
