Weight, expense, time to assemble/disassemble otherwise essential.

brian howat at howat enginnering makes them all the time, his ones are fully legal because they have over 24capscrews or a number like that, if you are getting them get his ones or some other steel one. the aluminum ones are reasonably crap because if they do ever get under too much pressure they can crack. like at the fun trial last weekend some guy had them and one of them broke clean in half (just the aluminum outer ring though) but dont bother spending money on them if you are going to be one of those people who gets them and still wont put there tyres under 10psi or whatever. on our comp and club truck we have beadlocks and we can run them until no more air comes out of the valve

Another disadvantage is they are next to impossible to ballance... alot of tyre shops won't bother to even try, so as someone else said treat them as an off road rim

one of the best advantages for me is the bead can't get pushed in when running in ruts 8)

Now for the books certification requires they are built from steel (min of 6mm mild steel for the rings) with a min of 36, 6mm grade 10 bolts, there are a few other bits that must be met but thats the majors
Brian Howat only puts 32 bolts on his.... now some certifiers will cert these becoase this it the only bit he's not up to play on but don't count on them passing  the certifier is taking responsability for these if they break so not to many will do this....

I think 4WD Bits has them for sale and they are certifiable and relitivily cheap

there is the option of going to the ARB second air beadlock they go inside the tyre no problems with balancing and they weight alot less than steel, but they cost about $200 each  , a bit pricy though.

4Wd accessories in CHCH make their own internal beadlocks. A few locals on the forum down here run them. I'm looking at a set as well.

to change tyres on beadlock rims, is it just a matter of undoing all thoose allen screws first?

if you have alloy 3 piece split rims howy can make internal beadlacks, lots of the trial guy are running them now, and they dont need to be certified because no one knows theres even there

8) I'd be guessing these are the same as the Hummer ones with a packer that sits bead to bead inside the rim, if so then there is no cert needed  your not modifing the rim, your just adding something inside the tyre
I've seen guy's on pirate using plastic sewer pipe to make these for there hummer rims as the plastic is lighter, bonus with this setup is it locks both inside and outside beads 8)
This is what I was going to do with mine but modify a set of steel rims to be two piece, removes the fatigue issue of alloy rims cracking and splitting and if I do bend em its easy enough to straighten them  but surprise surprise what I want to do isn't covered by the cert rules

effectivly yes... undo all the bolts take the clamp ring off and then jump on the tyre to pop it off the support ring (bit that sits under the bead) this is sposed to be a tapper fit so it centers the bead, but not all rims sold have this
the inside bead is just like a normal tyre so you'll have to push this in and then lever it over the lip on the bead lock side to put a new tyre on you just pop it on normally and clamp the outside bead and inflate

The other option is the internal beadlock like the Hummer rims where the rim splits and there is an internal spacer that sits inside the rim and stops the beads poping in, bonus with this is it locks both rims trade off is weight and they can be very auckward to setup as you have to get this support ring in there before you bolt the rim together

The second air system is a real bastard to change without a tyre machine but the bonus is becoase the second air is a mini tube the rims can't cut your side walls if you run fully flat, I know of a local guy who got home from taupo only to discover he had a flat tire almost two hrs of driving on a flat tyre
there is one very big bonus with second air systems they work for all bead sizes!!

A word of caution to all those thinking about gettting bolt together beadlocks.... they are made for set bead sizes... this may limit your tyre choice later

we are going to run the 2nd air system, as my vehicle is not too heavy we feel we will be ok as we would rather use beadlocks, and we have 17 by 10 steel rims to fit bigger brakes, and a different style of tyre besides the simex's we use now, the 2nd air's do them for 17's and we dont need a cert

yea, its 2 aluminuim strips tiged together with braces so it does do both sides, put the cage in the tyre, then half the rim on the tyre, then the other half and bolt it up

My understanding is that any modification to a rim requires a Low Vol Cert, including drilling an additional hole for a second air valve. How many would notice though.

The current model of internal beadlock is improved over the previous ones, how much improved is unknown. I haven't heard any bad feedback yet.

The cert guy I know said you don't need a cert for staun type internal beadlocks or for drilling the hole for the extra valve stem. The stauns are about $200 each i think. would it be cheaper to ship em from oz? They got a 5 year warranty to i think.

You would probably still have to cover the freight again though to get a replacement/sent fecked one back if the worst happened. Could quickly get rid of the savings, unless they are huge :D
