seddonville forest tracks.

Post by fisho »

[SEDDDONVILLE FOREST.
Seddonville forest is currently being logged. How much of the area affected is not yet known, but the tracks we opened recently look like they are in the prime area. Due to the storm damage done in july last year most of the best known tracks were wiped out by extensive windfalls.Hopefully the logging may result in some of these tracks being reopened. If i get any updated info on this i will post it up so people know what to expect in this area.

Hi Flag

we were there last weekend, there are some great tracks in that area.

we did the one with the steel I beam and concrete slab in the creek.
last year we cut all the trees down to the first bridge(approx 2.2 km in)
last weekend we cut a track round first bridge(bridge would be lucky to hold a quad bike let alone club trucks)cleared a few more trees then come to second bridge which was 90% gone, did the same there but only got another 500m after that.no one been in there for quite a while.

did a loop track on other side of road with a nasty bog in a valley, that was fun, winches got a work out there...
(they was quite a large digger and dozer not far from road on that track)

also did No 6 pylon track, that turned into a night trip :(

Hi Shane, the track where the bulldozer and digger were is a good one , hasnt been driven much yet. That is the area that will be logged first by the look of things.
The other track thru the creek with the beam and concrete block goes quite a way. Did you go to the left of the first bridge ?.The track past the second bridge goes to the top of the hill then turns right and goes thru some very deep bogs right round the pine block then comes back onto the track about 1km from the creek with the beam in it. This has not been driven for quite a few years and will need a lot of work to become drivable. Did drive over the second bridge about 5 yrs ago, thats wen it broke. Hope to find out more about the logging in the next couple of weeks.

if that's the one than leans hard to the right then its still pretty deep, the first vehicle was on quite a angle and winched out with some trouble.they cut a small ledge on right side bank so we could straddle the deep part and put left wheels in middle hump of track.vehicle then leans quite hard to left, still cant see were your going with the muddy water.some did better than others.Glen was only one to drive that hole.Tony drove all but that hole, only just though(has 37's now)glen winched 2 maybe 3 times with well used creepys,80# cruiser with new silverstones was the same(all had lockers, those 3 were the only ones to drive that long climb at the start)2 vehicles had to be winched/towed 10+ times and lead vehicle was down to 3 wheel drive.approx 7 hours, finished just after 10pm,we had 7 vehicles.3-4 well set up vehicles would do it in 2+ hours with no probs, its not that long.I didn't have my vehicle there.back to seddevile pub for sunday roast at 11pm,god that tasted good :)

Hi Shane

This is the hole Stephen is talking about.

Image

With a couple of trucks you can easily do it in 2 hrs. Andi Delis and myself did the uphill run in 1.5hrs. The trip Stephen was talking about we did it both ways in about 6 hrs with 8 trucks.

On another trip we rolled a Safari and then gave up. Stephen knows all about rolling in there as well.

Bloody good Track especially when wet

Hi Shane, back to seddonville. Marc Stephen and I had started to cut a track below that first bridge but hadnt had an oportunity to finish it. When you get to the top of the second hill there is a rough walking track that takes you round to an old tram track that is on some of the maps of the area. This tram track went quite a long way east towards the ngakawau gorge. It started near one of the old mlills on the main road to the charming creek walkway and can still be followed where it crosses the pakihi on bald hill. The track to the right at the top of the hill circles the pine plantation and would be a real challenge if you could still get round it.

another stage of the new track at seddonville has been completed and successfully driven. Sliding down hills across slips and round trees was the order of the day. Will be relatively strait forward when dry but a good challenge wen wet.
