Queen's bday 2006 - Minginui

Post by Clint »

Queen's birthday has been the date for a get together & 4x4 session based at my Mum's place at Te Whaiti for a couple of years now. The early starters drove over on Friday night to get settled in & the rest of the crew arrived Saturday. After a Steiny to get the day off to a good start six vehicles rolled out the gate: my LJ71 Prado, Klem's Hilux, Pricey's 'Super Bitch' Surf, Dan's Bighorn (all Lexus powered) Sherman's 80 series 'Tank' & Mike's Chev powered 40 series 'Bushmonster'.
Despite dire weather forecasts Saturday was a great day, we drove Okurapoto with no worries, apart from the Tank needing a tow in a couple of places. We winched a log out of our favourite mudhole & had a play.

Mike & Sherman took off back to get the spit cranked up while the rest of us went to have a look at another track. My memory was a bit lacking though & we went up a couple of dead ends. On the 2nd one we cut up & winched off a big log only to find the dead end 100m further on.
Then we heard a faint sound from across the valley: it was 2 fridges full of beer calling our names so we decided to go back & help Mike & Sherman with the serious business of watching the meat go round & round.
Since no one had broken anything we had to amuse ourselves by sticking together the bullbar kitset I had brought along for the Prado. We consulted the assembled style committee on the appearance of the bar & tacked it together. The spit roasted pork, beef & lamb was excellent & then we got into some serious bullshitting, bench 4wd'ing & general drunken mayhem. An attempt was made to put the 33's off the Tank on Handgrenade's Navara but we encountered some minor interference issues. After a little waste oil was used to give the fire a burst my brother decided that throwing on the entire 20L container would be far better.

Sunday dawned rather wet. Not to be deterred we set off. The first muddy hill was conquered only by the Bushmonster, the Super Bitch & the Hilux, but at the cost of a busted front diff on the surf & a broken front inner axle on the hilux. After the crippled vehicles were extracted we decided our intended route might have been a bit optimistic given the persistent rain & decided to bail out via a play on the sawdust heap at Minginui. The weather meant we had to run the spit on gas in the shed but another great feed was had by all.
Monday & the weather was fine again so Dan & I went for a nice wee drive down another neglected track, only a bit of winching & some tree clearing required.

Despite a bit of rain & some drivetrain carnage a good weekend was had by all.

Cheers
