how many fromt axles have you broken ???


what have you done to prevent this???

years ago the fireman ran jeep running gear

always breaking axles, always the short one I think, the one that always breaks.

so howie made him a new one and the next rally we broke an axle, so we start taking the diff apart and wouldn't ya know it, howies was so strong that it broke the other one.

How many: Three
Location: front left.
On what: Two on the Cherokee one on the TJ.
Solution: 1)wind out the limiting bolt on the steering knuckle to avoid a sharp turning angle and loading the CV
2) Avoid trying to turn in deep ruts.
3) Gas OFF when front wheels are in the air.

Reasons why not to beef up the axles or UJ's - Rather blow an axle and be able to change it in 45mins than load up the torque and strip out a R&P or spider gears.

True! But I wouldn't be against owning one. I enjoy variety of vehicles for all their different quirks but do enjoy my cruiser.

I have snapped an axle in my morris minor ute while gently changing into 2nd gear in over run tho!

what i did to stop it.... nothing just replaced as have got spares.

but speaking of jeeps its just the tow wagon...

See, now i dont want to appear to speaking on Shaynes behalf, but i would have thought that a question about breaking axles, in the "Jeep" section of the forum, would have been intended to run along the lines of addressing those who have broken axles in their Jeeps.... otherwise it ought to have been posted in a more general part of the forum.
Thing is that if folks were to ask about ... say... rear factory diff locks on a mitsi, in the mitsi forum, I wouldnt go into that forum and start bleating about ARB's in my Jeep... why? Because my input would have bugger all to do about Mitsis....

but i still say get longfields build it to NOT break and you will have a much more reliable vehicle, where as if you build it to have a fuse then the fuse will just keep blowing and no one likes to go wheeling with a guy who likes to blow...

It was not a rant, I agree with you. I don't say things about Nissans/Yotas/etc because I don't own them (never have, never will). Now someone were to ask a generic question about things, I would comment if I had something helpful to add.

As for breaking axles on Jeeps, I have not done one yet but then I don't have lockers either.

edit: have smashed 2 pinions due to axle wrap and one rear carrier pin due to too much lash wind up and impact and one front engage dog gear due to front carrier pin keep bolt comming out and the front carrier pin sliding into diff and locking it up 3 cv's and one front axle and one rear axle. everything that broke was made stronger and therfore makes the vehicle more reliable in the long run.

like i said, build it not to break, ie if something breaks you make it stronger so it doesnt break again. yes ive blown a fair bit of driveline stuff (see above) and each time there has been a root cause which was re-made stronger so it did not do it again.

if you build a weak point into a vehicle you will just keep breaking it and you will never improve as everytime you ask more of the vehicle it will just break... doesnt matter what brand it is.

Were they the 30spline set?, or the old 27spliners?, were they the old style ringed cv, plenty of people have broken the old school ones. I'd be very surprised to hear of anyone breaking a 30spline set in a trials truck with a 2l. If you did, then did you get a replacement from Bobby?, he will replace most breakages for free, even when the longs are not completely at fault (ie dodgy installs). Lifetime warranty. Did ya even speak to Bobby about them breaking?
They are by far the best solution for a Hilux or cruiser axle

the weekend of queen birthday i broke an axle but that was caused from the spider gears letting go

the first axle i have blown after fixing the problem Ihad witch was to much suspension travel on the lefthand side causing the u j to bind up
