WTD: 80 Series Landcruiser front diff

Post by Andrew1706 »

My front diff is a bit sad at the moment and I'm weighing up if I should just buy a new diff to swap over or go through the hassle of pulling mine apart and rebuilding it.

So what have you?

Mine is non locking open and of course if I manage to get one then it will be for sale but require rebuild.

whats wrong with it, that is so sad

mine has leaky swivel housing, clicky RF CV, very slight whine on ultra smooth roads and flogged bushes.

But when time and money allows, I will be rebuilding it. If ya rebuild it, ya know its good, as opposed to buynig a 2nd hand one that could have similar issues.

but if ya do chuck another one in, then flick me a PM, could be interested in bits off other one.

:P :P 8)

Ring and pinion is worn, has like a 1/3 of a turn backlash when turned by hand, leaky hubs, leaks around the diffhead, both cvs click, lefthand brake disc gouged to #### because the pad is down to steel plus missing two studs.

I just haven't got room for any downtime, I've got a seal and bearing kit but need to have a CV to make a match and while I could do it all on a saturday morning at work if something does wrong and I need another part I could be screwed.

If I have another diff lying here I can rebuild it easily myself and swapping them over would take probably an hour at the most..

Yeah I know I been dreaming over that auction for ages but don't have $3500 :D

Want his guards and bonnet though.

If someone was keen to buy both of my non-locking diffs then I could probably make those lockers happen :D

Wiring them up will be a bit different but I've done a bit of research.

You don't need lockers, you don't go offroad give them to me :D

unfortunately, I now do go off road and am missing body parts as proof

I have seen guys pay $2k for one 80 series diff and an open one at that, so they are still cheap

the bank is your friend

My bank doesn't like me, they spend all their money on stupid advertisements with a very attractive female, a guy on a megaphone and stupid little green cars

Bank Of Mum also doesn't like me

as for the wiring, its all there in the harness and loom, just plug and play. toyota were good like that, every loom was the same with all the plugs etc.

as for the telling what people paid for 80 series diffs... my spare front diff that i got off tardme cost me 120 notes

Of course you are sure that the backlash is all coming from the crown wheel and pinion and not the CV's and Drive Flanges, right.
Unless you can buy a factory electric locker complete hub to hub you may as well rebuild the old one. At least you will have the satisfaction of knowing that it is all good in there after that.

Fair call, but I can't risk any downtime. I've got the tools and skills to swap diffs over and can pull one apart but should something go wrong during the rebuild then I'm screwed.

Blew a cv last night and snapped another wheel stud off.

Last chance to find one before I start on a rebuild
