Hi Guys
I'm thinking about starting a bit of a project. There seem to be quite a few hilux nuts on here so thought some of you might be able to help with some info.
I'm going to need a complete front and rear axle from a Hilux, would like disc brakes on both but I think the disc rears are wider than any front axle I'll find arent they?I really want to go as narrow as poss, so maybe a drum rear. I need about 4.5:1 ratio I think 4.56:1 is the closest, would I find any of these around?
Only going to run about 150 hp max through them and the truck will be light, under 1500kg and only on narrow 33's so they should be heaps strong enough aye.
So after all that, what do you reckon that'd be worth if I could find them.
Might need to make some CV drive shafts too, any good and economical options on making these?
Will be keen to hear your thoughts.
Cheers
Mike

What's going on here then - more info please

"Friendly" wreckers may sell you complete solid axles for $300ea +-$100. You'll find 4.5:1 or maybe 4.88s easily enough in petrol surfs or hiluxs of various pre '88 age. You may get a LSD rear also if lucky.
I just sold a couple good ones the other day and got good coin

Easy enough to convert to discs from drums (needs to be done if you're splashing in muddy puddles) - look in the projects/mods on here.

Rangielux, your probably a good one to ask, are hilux axle assemblies heaver, weight wise than rangie ones?
Well, I'm thinking of selling the disco, to get a car and a toy 4x4, love the disco but it's a bit heavy offroad, and on the 35's it's not really much of a daily drive for the missus, and also since it was stolen it's got really rough inside and out, not so nice if your using it a bit on the road.
Plan for toy is. (it's not what your thinking, no supra motor involved)
Find a Suzuki Samurai, was thinking hilux axles with my own coil setup under it on some 32's or 33's and 4AGE with T50 box but I might have been talked out of that. The plan keeps changing, but it will be a Suzuki, it will have 32's or 33'3, and it will get a new engine with some power.
cheers for the help though.

Sounds like a cool project... I have a set of axles here complete drum to drum rear and manual hub to manual hub front complete with 4.5 ratio diffs... PM me if you're keen, they are in Chch...
There are no disc rear options in the Hilux rear axles you are talking about... there is the IFS model rear axle, which is 3" wider than the beam axle rear and has bigger drums but thats about it. The IFS model comes in coil and leaf options, but is the same internally.
Don't forget pics of the project

I wasn't thinking Supra either - they're more than 150hp - nevermind.
To get the best of a 4AGE, check out what the offroad racers do to make theirs strong, they are now quite common in the buggys.
Rangie axles would be much heavier than lux - weight wise. Hilux axles have been put under 413/samurais heaps of times although not alot of coil set ups, not a lot of chassis under there to weld things to. You would really need to start with a set of good coil-overs, the worlds your oyster

Have fun.
Disconewhere wrote:Sweet, would you want to sell it? How much? it 4.5 standard for surf's?
Mike
Oh, and 4.5 is odd for a 3Y powered truck, must be an import... NZ new 3Y and 4Y powered trucks had 4.88's.
Standard ratios for Hiluxes:
4.1 - rare
4.3 - 2.8 diesel powered Hilux utes and 2.4 turbo diesel Surfs
4.5 - 2.4 diesel Utes - most common ratio
4.8 - NZ new petrol utes
5.3 - very old Hiace vans and trucks - rare now thanks to SupraSurfs nationwide crusade to hog as many as he could find
