alright, the 3y is staying in for just a little while longer..
it goes mint, starts first time every time, was recoed 50k ago, doesnt miss a beat... untill i go offroad and it gets a bit of abuse, it stalls easy mostly on hills, then hard to start, then gota rev the shit out of it to get idleing again..
What can i do to fine tune it, just to keep me happy for the next couple months, its got new timing parts, ie: dizy, rotor, leads, plugs, coil pack all that has been replaced, what else can i do... its a 3y with elec timeing

I am forever adjusting float levels and tearing the carb to bits, Trying anythign to agressive normally unsettles it and you spend half an hour revving it so it wont styall. I vreplaced the secondary diaphrams and cleared all the internal and external vaccum lines out with the air compressor replaced a few seals and it ran well. for a y SERIES.
best thing to do is sell the whole engine to a boatie for an anchor as thats all there good for. massive gas users, under performing pre x flow and very breakable lazy engines.
yet i cant pull mine out....
yea im thinking the carb could do with a service..
yep they are gutless pieces, that drink the gas, but they are 1 of the most bulletproof pieces a shit ever made. it will be comin out soonish, just need a little attention, but its 1 a the most reliable donks ive had, considering the abuse it gets
Re: fine tuning a 3y
i find the same problem with my 3y... get a reasonable incline and the motor struggles. pain in the arse. if you rev it up early it is easier and copes a weeee bit better but still struggles. have stalled it a few times doing that but now just put the clutch in and brake and give it another go...
they are strong motors however and mine continue to truck along with some high revs in the mud for a few hours... in saying that i would like to drop mine out also and put in a v6 commy or something similar. but i don't have a lot of mechanical know how with motor replacements etc so haven't progressed that...
and they do drink the gas. surprising considered they are gutless as fcuk

Re: fine tuning a 3y
go injected i did and no longer have the issue. and has better throttle response. was pretty easy as well now that i have done it. only cost me a couple hundy for parts and you could probably have it running in a weekend once you had parts. mine took forever as needed to get the gearbox which is still wrong but cant afford to buy a 5 speed atm. kinda pisses me off not having that 5th gear would help with the gas grr well i wont start on that. but hey if anyone has a cheap 5 speed can even be 2wd as have a spare back housing could be interested (might be able to find some spare cash)
. lol
i could probably write up a list of parts as well if needed.
i would say go with the injected if you dont want to go new engine atm. starts easier, better throttle response, probably better fuel usage but cant tell with the 4 speed as reving at about 3500 at 100 kms when on motorway.
just my thought after doing the conversion.

i used to have a 3y injected surf a few years back and it got a hiding up over the wainuihill in welly for years. i could not break it and never had an issue with not starting ar anything. was always slow but very reliable. get the injection if you can

yep they are bulletproof, slow, but always get ya home, my daily is a 3ye, so if was was to do a swap ide have to find another to replace into my daily.
my cheap option is to go 3ye, but im wanting to 3rz it shortly, cause its such a simply swap... decisions decisions

If you've got to re-start it on a hill hold the throttle wide open while your turning it over and it'll eventually fire up and clear itself

yep, i do that, and it does start again, might have to just accept the fact an engine never gona run the way you want it when ya given it ass holes

Its just a carburator thing, you learn to live with it
