GQ engine swap
Wednesday we are changing the diesel engine in the 94 GQ c/chassis for another one with less ks and it has an aftermarket turbo. As we see it the only problem will be to make an air filter box and plumb it into the short snorkel which is for an MQ.I know famous last words but, if all else fails we can just put the old one back in for the time being. As this will be the 1st turboed engine are there any pitfalls we should look out for?

Re: GQ engine swap
Heaps of info on here about aftermarket turbos, what sort of turbo, is it a kit such as ATX or Denco as these are proven. Might pay to get turbo checked out, bearings, seals etc. A failure could be expensive. If you decide you dont want it I could be interested.

Re: GQ engine swap
Has been up and running now for several days, the turbo was already attached to the donor engine, having trouble getting the turbo to come onto boost,it is a Hi-Flowed Garrett GT2860RS roller bearing running .6 front and .64 rear on a Turbo Guide kit, it has to be dyno-tuned but, can`t be done without a PYRO METER fitted and that we don`t have.Best we can tell it is only running about 4-6 lb @ 2000rpm.Today we are reconfiguring the piping for the snorkel as it is running a little hot, even for a Patrol, and tomorrow it has to go back to the exhaust shop to re-seal the dump pipe as that is leaking badly.

Re: GQ engine swap
Not an expert on automotive turbos, the one onboard the ship I am currently working on has 800mm turbine diameter so need to get around auto specs. From info gathered on here that is a good set up for relatively high boost at low rpm, ball bearing good, good for offroad and towing. Sounds like you work truck hard so turbo going to be good for you. Boost redings you are getting seem low for this set up, yes need to have less restrictive exhaust from 2.5 to 3" i think. Sounds like should sort this out tomorrow.
Have you heard any more about bf KM2 mud tyres as I got a reasonable deal on some thinking about buying.
Good luck
