Tyres for SWB Safari

Hey guys, shocker question i know but I've got a SWB safari with 33x12.5x15 wranglers and thinking about going to a 35 with more aggressive pattern like swamper etc. I've found in the mud on low pressure I loose clearance at the diff head and loose traction with the weight. Any thoughts or experience on 35s? Also concerned about power loss with gearing as its a non turbo TD42. Really is just a 4wd truck but also use for towing sometimes so keeping some power is important. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Has a 4 inch suspension lift/2 inch boby lift so clearance should not be an issue.

It seems that 35" tires on a non turbo TD42 really don't work that well when the mud gets thick.....but then you just have a good excuse to go forced- and that'll help you greatly with towing too.

Creepy crawlers seem to be a favorite as the safaris weight gets them bagging out and cutting into soil well. I must have had 6 people recommend the creepys before I shelled out for a set.

35's should fit without problem since you have total 6" of lift- but if there are any issues the guards can be cut out another few inches without too much drama.

Hey thanks dude. Yeah I was with a couple of guys who had simexs and they deffinately got traction where I did'nt. Also saw a rear locker in action and now want one. I guess I could go for changed diff ratios and then 35's should be the go.

yeah i turboed mine and will still be looking at changing my diff ratios aswell for better on road driving.

where abouts in NZ are you??

i went for 35x11.5 silverstones and they work brilliantly where i drive as the soil has a lot of clay and the silverstones clear easy as. turbo does help but one thing i find is that with the 35's you can start to pick up a bit of speed on some very steep descents with the stock ratio diffs. i guess you could go crawler gears in the transfer box but that only is low ratio in 4x4, what i have done to try and help is reduce the motor idle speed but that only helps so much.

my recommendation> if you can turbo your truck yourself or fairly cheaply do it and go for the 35's!!

If you have a manual trans you should be able to run 35's no problems with std diff gears,much harder with a auto though with the taller top gear.

been running 35's for 3yrs years now ,had creepys but fark they are heavy tyre but they are good,had maxxis trepedors aswell,now run 35 simex's and they are far better than creepys ,dont really have a problem in the mud and tracks but on the road is very different running 35's on a non td42 ,i am normally at the back on a club trip going to a trip with other whales,apart from there will be 1 less saf at da back now as sum1 has change there diff's to 4.8's wonder who that is??

Ok thanks guys. Hey vince interested in a non turbo TD42 on 35's. Very keen on all the toys (lockers, turbo, 35's, diff ratios etc) but as always have to be careful where to spend the cash as its not falling off the trees round my house lately. My 33's are mint condition at present so hard to ditch them but after seeing simex's in action I think its the way to go. Particularly after a cruiser towed my fat arse up a slippery track with simexs. Well me and a bunch of others!! (long Day!). I'm in upper hutt. Have considered a turbo but was interested how non turbos go on 35's. Incidently the cruiser on simexs had 33's but they apparently measured 35's??. I've heard of tyres often being under sized but was surprised his are over. Compared to my 33's they were deffinatly "big" and they worked helluva well. Feels to me like my truck just needs as much tyre as it can get given its weight. My feel is the more toothy tyre the better for weighty trucks. Gotta say though as a newbie to 4wding, the safari can take a beating. Im in the "use momentum" stage and its bloody bulletproof. Great wagons.

Mine goes great on 35's non turbo, but the motor is in perfect nick though, makes a huge difference. Going to change diffs to 4.6 for better hill climbing ability and overtaking on highway. Put a front lokka in, you will notice the difference first trip out.

Ihave been running 35s on my non turbo saf for 3 years, bloody slow on the road but not to bad off the road, but yes i have just had the diff ratios changed to 4.88s and what a hell of a difference that makes, the ideal about installing a turbo has gone from my mind for a couple of years anyway.

The ratio change sounds good. Is it an expensive process or can you do it yourself?

i have double block simex's on now and are 11.5 on 8inch rims,trepedors great tyre put them on cause i started to do a lot more road k's so creepys came off and sold them,now the old tart just sits in da garage,so simexs went on ,simex's on the road are better than my creepys for sure ,creepys they tend wear uneven and crown never seemed to track well on the road,but hey they are a mud tyre and a road tyre,dont have a problem with simex's,,plus creepys are a lot heavy than most cross ply tyres that are out there.
mind just got a real good price on some kl71's new dont think i can turn them down at that ,so might run two sets, ave to chat up her in doors 1st cause i need to buy a rear 4.6 diff aswell,and finish my ute conversion aswell ,and a new rear bar now hey gards!!!

I am currently running creepys and they go all right they dont bag much which lets them down, in they summer I am going to go to 36" simexs tripple blocks for the west coast and 35" KL71 for the Canterbury river beds, when going to the coast I will run 33" road tyres and cart the off road ones in a trailer to save on wear and tear

I got mine installed by 4wd upgrades, bloody good job done to, if you have worked on diffs before you could install yourself, but i had back locker installed as well, the 4.88s cost around a couple of grand,

I am changing to Simex tripple blocks. I would like to go to the 36's but how many Area's, Clubs and organised trips have a limit on tyre size at 35. Is it a real issue as I would like to travel into more areas, including the South Island

If you want to get really geeky about it, no ones really copying anyone, just offering a different option. Every copy I've seen/heard about has a different compound which makes them better or worse for certain situations, or for certain budgets (quality vs price).
