if its your shiny one like mine I wouldn't .....keep them a std size....bigger tyres will put extra stress on the weakass centre diff lock on the 90's

33's (or 285/75/16) are okay on these really. You just have to be aware of the limitations of the ctr diff. It can't handle much abuse.
My suggestion would be to put a selectable diff lock in the back at the same time so that you don't have to spin it up too hard to get through stuff.

Heres a RX Prado on 33's with a 2 inch lift

And another pic of it at standard height with 265/75/16 BFG Muddies, they actually measured as high as the 33 inch Wranglers just not as wide (the BFG was a much better tyre and size might i add)

Forgot to add to the pics above of my old Prado that the 15x8 steelies were wide Cruiser offset and the alloys were just standard offset 16x7's from a 96 Surf.

And yes the transfer case's cant handle to much abuse the goes with the little IFS front diff and cv's so be carefull and drive smooth and you will be fine.

So what does it take to break these centre lock/diff thingee's?

Normal soft roading would be fine, so what about snatch towing etc? How about bigger tyres?

To be honest I am not planning a lift so will be sticking with std rims and maybe a slightly bigger tyre (32's perhaps) and a rear air locker. Most likely be a SWB auto unless a manual SWB falls out of the trees at the right time. Is a lift worth it?

Any problems with this set up, should I factor in a front locker when I get the rear done as well to strengthen that end up as well? (will be a chinese one if they are avaliable)

How hard are the tow hooks to fit? Easy or some mods required?

From memory they don't like reversing in 4wd.

So take it easy in reverse and never snatch tow in reverse (wouldnt anyway - old habits).

Anything that can be done to fix this achilles heel?

the problem is caused by the reverse cut of the 8" high pinion diff and affects the 80 series (if fitted) as well and possibly the 70 series (LJ's and KZJ's and the a few normal 70's).

Someone like JAFA might be able to make stronger chromoly centre diff replacement parts......,

not sure about the reverse cut of the gears and how to fix ... apart from being aware of the problem and driving/recovering accordingly....
