timing belt questions?

Post by Robbiee »

Hi there, this might sound like a bit of a noob question, but I have done very little work on diesel engines... How hard is it to do a timing belt on a 2.8L turbo diesel isuzu MU (engine-4JB1T)
Basically I have all the parts, but money is an issue so was hoping to be able to do it myself, take fan belt/alternator belts off seems easy enough, then the covers(I red somewhere you need to seal the bottom cover when refitting?) then does the belt just come off and new one goes on?(with tensioners ofcourse) with no great hassle.... or is there lots of little tricks that a newbie ouldnt know without getting help...

any help will be great thanks

Done it ... and had the injector pump off since ...
Not too difficult ...
And Isuzu make it easy ... there is a postion forn licking bolts in the pump and cam pullys that makes timing it right easy ...
Where abouts are you ??
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Hi RObbie..
3 weeks ago I was in the same position as you are. Just done a 2.8 bighorn cambelt, having never done one in my lfe before. I wanted to do it as much as for the experience as to save dosh but jeeze.. have to say it was a bit of a headache.
I was quoted $138 in labour costs to do it but lots of small problems (and doing it at night) kind of made it into a 2 night job rather than the expected 4-5 hour job I had hoped. In hindsight I would pay the money to get someone to do it but I did like the satisfaction of doing it myself.

The cambelt was 40 bucks, the pulley was $70 and the idler was $65. I also got a cam seal ($18) but forgot to put it in (wasnt leaking anyway). The worst thing is that it seems there is no space and its so damn fiddly to do. Once you have done it you could do it again in half the time but when you are finding your way the first time you won't want your grandmother or children within earshot because they may not like what they hear.
It's definately doable but expect a few hassles along the way. Best if you can get someone who has done it before and knows some of the tricks to help you.
There is a tensioning lever thing that they reccomend you put 9-10 kg's weight on, near the tensioner pulley. I just took the advice of smeone on this but its probably better to do it by the book.
Also the sealant around the bottom of the cam cover looked like it would seal up again nicely so didnt put any new stuff there. My instructions didnt mention this either.
I never took the radiator out to do it but it probably would make life a lot easier if you did.
The parts guy said the engine can take a square tooth or a round toothed belt. Mine turned out to be the round toothed, but might pay to check you have the right one.

Good luck with it if you have a go anyway..

Cheers for that advice!! I think myself and a mate will be atempting this, time is no issue and he has recently completed a mechanics course at tech so has a bit of knowledge.... also managed to find an online manual explaining the basic DOs and DONTs, I have all the parts(got both belts so I dont end up having to wait for correct belt) but I didnt get cam seal, hopefully its not leaking!!
was also planning on doing the water pump aswell, so may aswell rip the radiator out to make it easier for myself... will also give me a bit more space to tighten the steering box as the dam grub screw is pretty seezed :?
