On Sat did a trip up Tomos and over as far as the bomb site. This is still a hard and soul destroying track but also one of the best. Although i love doing Tomos it is getting to the stage where it is not worth the hassle because of all the idiots that go up there in standard road vehicles and then get stuck Every time I go I always end up towing people with road tyres and they dont even have a basic recovery rope as far as gear. Has anyone else just driven around people and left them there? I would feel like a big C Hunt leaving people stuck in the bush at night but like last night 4 trucks spent 1.5 hrs extra in the bush getting people out who should not have been there in the first place. If I got 1/2 the amount of beer people promised me for draging them out I would be pissed for a month but sadly I am still to get my first bottle. What do others think? Drive off or help?
Yeah im of the same thought as you at the moment Kimbo. previously the thought of not getting a fellow 4 wheeler out when they were stuck would of been unheardof. but in the last year or two the people i've seen real shineys bogged hard down that have a wharehouse rope and thats it, no decent hooks, spades or even a tyre pump so they could air the tyres down a bit.
i'm getting to the stage where i stop and have a look at the situation and if i can drive around them i will offer to recover them on the way out. or if i cant get past the truck i will pull them backwards so i could get past and leave them to there own devices from there.
BUT if there truck is all set up and you can see that the driver had all sorts of gear but things went all horribly wrong and something broke ,snaped or what ever the story was then i would be only to willing to help a fellow 4X4er nut out of there sticky situation

Two things to note.....
The right hand track heading to the summit NEEDS to be left the F##K alone.... or someone is going to get seriously hurt, or worse. It used to be left by many for the down track only. Seeing as how the left and centre tracks are getting "too hard" for some, the left track is copping a lot of use, and hence about half way up is breaking through adjacent to a gully and a drop to nowhere. Three vehicles in the last two weeks have now been recovered from this very point trying to ascend, and if a decent is attempted, esp in the wet, tyres will drag to the left and potentially over the edge. There isnt much stopping it from breaking away now. This is not a "maybe".... Shit WILL happen here... and it will not be "Good Shit"
Secondly..... I am utterly sick to death of punks in daddys 4x4 drinking piss and leaving their F#####G cans and bottles etc laying all over the place. Also, tonight we had some stoopid twat about 6 inches away from death cause it was cool to drift down the muddy hill 1/2 way up thommos, it got away and he ended up 1/4 over the edge. Two trucks trying to winch him back onto the track, WITH two more trucks as anchors couldnt budge him. We got him out eventually, with his drunk/stoned mates looking on. At least they saved us the ignominy of trying to offer advise.
I think one of the occupant of the 4 trucks in that crew said "thanks".
did they have recovery gear? Did they have tow hooks? Did they have half a brain between them?
and what's with the dopey pricks cutting the backs off Mu's and 70 series 4wd's, then putting extra seats in so that the un-restrained drunken passengers can see over the now useless roll bar.

charge them as much money or valuables as they are carrying and donate it to BOP 4 Wheel Drive club for track maintance.
Dont give it to the BOP 4wd Club thats the last thing i do we help them out of the bush and then the dick that we helped told ever 1 at the next meeting that we left them there. Ever 1 got to start same where so help them because 1 day they may be helping you out. Well thats what i think but next time i got to pull 1 of the BOP 4wd Club truck out i will be thinking twice..................

i was up the te aroha side just after all the rain from may and it was a doddle but going over the top was a differant story. you will need good winches and lots of gear.
coop wrote:Anyone been up there recently? Thinking of going up there on Sunday (Waikato side), just wana know how bad it is haha. Cheers.
up to the top and back is a doddle on the Te araha side mate, theres only a couple spots that give road going trucks a bit of fun but it is a nice drive none the less.
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
OK, I been trying to get some good info on the thompsons track, this seems like a semi-appropriate place to ask further.... I cuurently have a daily driven isuzu MU, have the tow ropes but not whinch(yet) and only on AT tyres, would this track be a bit out of my depth as yet? I havn't even managed to do it as a passenger yet so have no idea, bt hear its alot of fun for a day out

yes very do-able for you on the tearoha side, theres only a couple of parts that you will need to be carefull about but you should be fine. remember that if you get totaly stuck and have no one there to help you i charge fuel cost and recovery fee of 2 boxes of TUI this applies only to members here, anyone else gets double fuel cost and 4 boxes of TUI

Tui is a fair charge..... aslong as I can help drink after tow out hahaha
AT's are alright when it fine but i dont think you would be going to far at the moment. give it a couple of month then head up there the view is fantasic

haha yeah, I figured that... need to wait for this rain to clear for sure!!!
and whats with this tui, its good, but(dear I say it) there has got to be better drinks out there when someone will payanything for a tow
Took my Cherokee up there today, its on pretty average ATs and it got up there no worries. Weather was shit, your MU could do it I'd imagine but its always a good idea to have more than one truck as theres a few play areas where I got stuck a few times. If ya don't have another truck to tag along we might be going out again in a few weeks if youre keen. Cheers.
