Haven't run the tape over one yet but I am sure thay are wider and the diff head is bigger , gear ratio not sure if i can get 4.55 . but in saying that I could still cut the diff head down and slide in the hilux head . Does any one know the width from disc to disc on the 80 series . Cheers Klem

The axle is SH%&LOADS wider, but the 80-series runs a high-pinion 8" toy diff. You should be able to slot a standard old Hilux 8" diff in to one no problems (I run an 80-series diff in the front of my MU in a standard Hilux front housing).

There is no high-pinion 4.55 ratio that I am aware of. 3.9, 4.3 and 4.88 from memory. You could get a 4.88 high pinion then use a 4.88 from something else... then you can get 3" bigger tyres :)

Think the Hilux is around 1380mm-odd from wheel flange to wheel flange... So the 80-series one will be around 5"-6" wider, which sounds about right.

Yes, you can get free wheeling hubs for them, but I think they need the spacers as well... Kev (Oldblue) might be the man to ask on that one.

From everything I've read, you will need spacers. Prado has 8" front diff and auto hubs, to fit manuals you need spacers, unless you change the hubs and stubs.

From my limited knowlege on 80s, The beam axles have asian freewheeling hubs, as a standard assery, the Independant front end model have driveing flanges. Because they are in 4WD all the time, just like a rangerover. You would only need spacers if you had fitting problems with wheel offsets. I don't think the 80s had electric or auto hubs.

hmmm... pretty sure all the 80's had beam axles, IFS came in on the 100 series. And they were all full-time 4WD so had drive flanges, not hubs...

So its probable that you can just bolt some Hilux free wheeling hubs on there... but its just a guess, I haven't done it.
