Hey guys After looking endlessly at Pirate 4x4, alot of the more serious trucks have some insanely wide axles! Does anyone know what is availiable in NZ thats really wide? AND DONT SAY USE 4" SPACERS
Cheers
SASed Isuzu Mu - hilux diffs, Rears up front, disc brake conversion, ifs hub swap, crossover steering, and legal!!!!
and just recently a guy in welly put late model JK rubicon jeep gear under his TJ so we measured it against a hilux geared trials truck running same wheels and it was a whole foot wider
lot of the yanks use military axles too

ok ill try again stuppid new computer lost what i tryed to submit Ive seen alot of aussies and a few yanks are using 80 series axles gives extra 150mm+? width over standy hilux diffs the rear diff has a 90mm offset to the right which is a slight problem if uve got a hilux as drive shaft will foul on fuel tank fixing that is either a case of rear mounting a tank or pissing round flipping the diff which is quite a major with an isuzu there should be no issues with fuel tank. il tryn find a thread id been reading and post it up for you. Thanks Stu
One point to remember is all formed or even semi-formed tracks in NZ were all landrover width, hilux's etc fit well onto these tracks and most kept open over the years have been done in early cruisers or hilux's, the later trucks such as VX's and Safari's are bit tighter on the tracks but not too bad, if you go much wider than that then you'll have problems, hummers are a classic example of the problem. Most of us using lux axles go for the wide rear surf axles then fit landcruiser offset rims and do a IFS hub swap to the front axle (to match rear width) this gives a hilux a good wide stance that is certifiable. If you're just building a dedicated trailer queen for a particular purpose then I guess the wider the better
Apart from trialing going wider is a disadvantage on most tracks.
The NZ railway tracks are 3 foot 6inches compared to most of the world on 4 feet 8.5 inchs. The reason for this is tighter turning because of the terrain here.
The same thing applies to most 4x4 tracks in this country.
I think the std hilux -cruiser width is an advantage over a Safari that has tyre problems every trip.
