Steering wander

Post by rowinz »

My FJ70 wanders a bit on the road. I've had the wheel alignment done, but it still does it, to a lesser degree. Would replaceing the steering damper fix this? Does anyone know anything else I could try...

Heavy duty steering damper makes a big difference if you are running bigger tyres than O.E. fitment. Old Man Emu & Tough Dog make two particulary good units.

I ended up changing the shakle bushes the originals were worn and rubber putting eurathane ones stiffened it up a bit. Now I need to get springs to give me back some of the movement.

Hi

I have the same 'steering wander' type issue with a swb nissan safari. recently changed to 33" tyres, and suspension lift.

am thinking the steering damper is the first thing to replace? any recommendations on where to buy, and which make? any other ideas??..

Cheers.

Jacko what height lift did you do? Caster could be a problem

just 2" sus lift.

am looking at a tough dog castor correction kit on ebay at the moment. may be the answer.

would have thought any castor problems would have shown up at the wheel alignment??

Has anyone had any experience with the tough dog/4 way return to center steering damper?

would this be recommended over a standard heavy duty damper??

Thanks.

I would put up with steering wander rather than going for castor correction bushes. I'm going to take mine back out, once I save for the Nissan replacements  If I'd realised how much travel I'd lose by putting these in I wouldn't have. Going drop box next.

Ok, thanks Dave.

I think I'll just replace the steering damper, and see how that goes.
