Hey, i recently went flying and whilst cruising over Rangiora i saw a track with lots of mud...I marked its location and the other weekend embarked on finding a way on to it...
Finding the track, i found the begining a rather cruisy bit of track, with a few muddy ruts... But, my mates truck couldn't handle the steep exits of the rutted parts so i didn't get to go far into it, has anyone been along the whole track?
(Its the track that runs west along the northern edge of the Ashley.)
Any pics?
Cheers all.

Re: Rangiora/Ashley River 4wd Track?
Popular track. I live in Ashley near the start of the track and haven't been on it for ages... why? dunno. Seems every time we head up there with a ORE group we end up out in the river bed rather than on the track. And personally I guess I did it a few times when I first got a 4x4 and now normally just play and test more locally and tend to go down stream if anything. Or for longer tracks go some where new. I do find it is pretty bumpy and rutty, so chucks you around a lot and there is not much driving involved, just use the right pedal, but its high time I did it again.
On a fine sundaynear the end of winter after plenty of rain is a good time to go pulling all the townie trucks on 29" ATs out of the ruts made by 33" MTs +
Went up there once and came bullbar to grill with a surf, behind him were some reasonably capable trucks so I'm not sure why they had him in the front but of course he was stuck and they could only pull him backwards and couldn't get around him due to the nature of the track, so we threw a strop on and I pulled him in reverse (him forwards) in the ruts for 100-200m until there was a place I could get off the track to let them go past, they had a yarn and then took off into the river bed.

ha! excellent! ...yeah my mates Prado got stuck on every rut!...
Me with my 33" M/Ts was fine, had to dig him out 4 times, and snatch him once.
But i don't mind helping him if he gets stuck, makes it interesting, otherwise like you said its just right pedaling all the way!
Cheers, i might take off next weekend, and go up the entire track and see what its like.

It can be done on 31's quite comfortably if you pick your lines.

Got bored and went for a drive. Ended up on this track, lot of water and mud. Was thinking I wasn't too smart heading up there alone but kept going any way, got past all the main bogs etc no problems and did a big loop and came all the way back in 2wd, no issues except getting cross-rutted a couple of times but got out in 2wd each time. After all that I was out on the river bed and have just come home with snapped axle studs....

Ouch!
I found it quite a cruisy drive, i have no friends with competent 4WDs which is annoying!
Most have City run arounds, which they don't want scratched!
