Post by chrome »

I would go for the top mount for 2 reasons

1 Readily available off the later models and easy to fit

2 On top the radiator does not block with mud.

A factory fitted top mount off a GTiR Pulsar is HUGE and is a really well flowing intercooler. Also you can pick them up really cheap off Tardme with all the mounting hardware you should need.

Just dont make the Nissan error and mount it over the exhaust manifold...mount it as far back from the engine as you can.

what about one of the water cooled ones? then you dont need to rely on air flow since chances are when you have your foot right up it you might not be getting much ground speed or airflow, or mounting a fan on a normal bar and plate?

I have a Supercharger and a 1KZ intercooler and a pyrometer. Most times 4 wheeling when I really floor it ,it is for such a short time and the motor is not really under load because the gearing is too low the intercooler does nothing.

It is mainly on the road that they are of any benefit.

Cheers Richard

cheers, handy bit of info. Did you ever have the supercharger with no intercooler? or have you tried different options (front/top etc) always good to get some info from someone who has been there and done it, no point re inventing the wheel eh

iv just finished front mounting my 1994 landcruiser prado (1kz-te) and it goes bloody well it impressed me how much power it added with on road use, havent had much chance to try it offroad but im sure what richard said about it not making much differance will be true as your not going fast enough to cool the air

looks like i have a subaru sti top mount to play with, i also have a standard wrx one as well , also have the bonnet scoop although does anyone know about the water/air intercoolers like off the early legacys?? surely they are better than an air/air hard to find tho

GT4 Celicas ran a water to air intercooler aswell.
As expensive as they are also look into the barrel intercoolers...any performance shop should have them.

they would be better suited to 4wding as they still cool at low speeds. there's heaps on trade me for $20-$50. i go one sitting in the shed i was going to use but don't have the room up front for the radiator so ended up getting the full prado set up

Anyone know if you need to get a cert done once you've added an intercooler.? I've got the 93 prado 1kz-te also and have been interested in intercooling it for a while so I can actually overtake people on the open road safely, just haven't had the money or time yet. Cheers
