Hand brake swap for disc

Post by Rangerat »

Hi all

Had to pull the hand brake drum to bits again!!! full of mud etc... and you all know me, if it breaks tiwce it's going to be fiddled with!!!

Looking at swapping the drum set up for a disc set up.
Thinking out loud, use a mechanical brake (as per the hand brakes on the rear disc's on cars)
Looks easy, but any more ideas out there or has anybody seen/done it?

Rat

P.S. them 35 Centipedes are the s@#t. Lock the diff, piont and shoot yeehaaa.

Im guessing it has to be mechanical for cert/wof issues being an ëmergency brake"??
Hmmmmm let me know what sort of disc you want, I may have something........

I'll be measuring up for the disc conversion this weekend. Might drop you a line when I know what I want.

Just a thought Rat
I'm running hydro discs on my rover's fiddle brakes, at the moment I'm working on linking them to the clutch pump/res off a hilux that is worked off a handbrake lever (with the locking mech removed)

Just an idea

I think I have it all sussed.
I am pricing up a mechanical disc handbrake (cable operated) as fitted to trailers (3500kg rating)
It comes as a complete kit, disc, caliper, bolts etc..
With a bit of fiddling it should (now I've doomed it!)be easy.
Will post a write up when I do it.

http://www.x-eng.co.uk has disc conversion kits. I found that the drum works allright for me. When I replaced the shoes and adjusted it, there was a huge improvement. It will lock the wheels on gravel while you're on the move now 8) .

I bought an x-eng one, will let you know how it goes when it's fitted... I've had a few to many times filling the handbrake drum full of mud and losing use of the handbrake to be happy with the standard one.
