I have been involved in a couple of nasty close calls and I promote safety.

The problem is that Photos are very impressionable and what is said after accounts for nothing and in the future someone will say to his mate. "I saw two hooks bolted together, what good idea "

Oh yeah pedro, they were ultra safe about it.......

but we used some spares laying around. In addition to the hooks, you will need Grade 8 bolts of the appropriate length (we needed 1/2" x 2.5" bolts), 4-Grade 8 washers, and 2-Grade 8 nuts.

The intro talks about someone rocking up with no hooks. There-should-endeth the lesson. But instead the article goes on with this genius brainwave (after belittling the person with no hooks, perhaps the bozo that came up with this idea needs the belittleing) of hooking two recovery hooks together......

To the fourth picture. So we are going to put one end of the hook onto/into a non rated point for anchoring purposes, and snatch off this??? Do I need to point out the inherant risk in this? Well I will anyway, just in case you were the person that wrote the article or came up with this glorious plan to contend this years Darwin awards. (again, not saying it was you, just covering my bases here)
1) the attachment point gives way, and HELLO, theres a really dangerous thingy flying through the air.
2) One of the two hooks flattens out, and with no secure anchor point for the hook, again we have a possible example of ballistics potentially contributing to nastyness to humans. The idea of BOLT HOLES on a recovery hook is to BOLT IT TO A SECURE MEMBER. If its bolted to a chassis and the hook is strained to the point of flattening (because hooks are designed to flatten, not break... why.. well it stops metal hooked stuff from flying through the air) the only projectile is the strop.
The alternate solution (aside from sending the non equipped vehicle home in the first instance) might be to wrap a strop around his axle and yank him. It might damage his truck, but at least no innocent party would be at risk. And if it damaged his truck, he might do things right next time.

Next I move on to picture 5, and comment in conjunction with the quote "An Anchor Shackle of the appropriate strength would be less clumsy, and at least three times the price, the Trail Recovery Hook can be used to join two ends of recovery straps"
Firstly, again, we have a batman inspired piece of weaponry ready to kill and maim, again, should either one of these hooks fail, there is the very real potential for damage to both humans and vehicle. Secondly, I dunno where you get your "anchor shackle"s from (we call em Bow shackles down these parts) but I can get the same rating in a shackle for half the price of a towhook from my local chain and rigging supplier who sell both.

Photo 6 is accompanied by the comment "The downside is that the hook will probably chew up the frame hole." and will therefore also be damaging the strength of the hook, and the texture of the surface of the hook, the same surface that will later on (during the Darwin award semi final play-offs) have a recovery strop rubbing/abraiding on it and hence damaging the eye (if utilised in the manner of photos 4 and 5). Wonderous applause to the author for the forethought involved here.

This concept is simply irresponsible and unnecessary and downright dangerous. The entire article smacks of idiocy and lacks any credibility.

I would suggest that the paragraph (quoted) "Caution: Do NOT use the factory Jeep hooks to make our "Trail Recovery Hook"; the design is wrong to build a Trail Recovery Hook." Should read..... "Caution, dont take any notice of this because we are really just having an inter-office bet to see who is dumb enough to actually try this"
