Thompsons Track request from Council
A note received from Matamata-Piako District Council regarding Thompsons Track.
Apparently there have been some 4x4 Clubs up there of late, which has rutted areas on the track.
Can you please send out a note to all the clubs etc to restrict their usage of the track over the winter months. What we don't want is club days with 20 odd trucks going up in one hit. 2 or 3 trucks on any day is ok.
We don't want to have to restrict or even close access to the track, this will not happen if the clubs do their bit, are sensible and look after the track.
If anyone wishes to contact me direct my contact numbers are below or send me an email at mvanb@mpdc.govt.nz

They are just out there having fun
this website is so aganist the genral public having 4wds and using them just because they are not members on here or to a club they are not plonkers
you give them a hard time for owning a four wheel drive to drop the kids at school then you give em shit for using them to discover the country offroad how do you no that they are not better drives than you or me or any of us
give them a break
you can not tell me that your very first time 4wding was with a club on a organised run with all the gears
just give them a fuking break

shane, shane, shane, I do not see folks picking on the soccer moms in thier SUVs or the non club member enthusiasts.
the plonkers our Mr XJ is referring to are those who go up common well known tracks such as thommos and drink piss, throw their rubbish on the ground and generally under estimate the track and the fact that they are on bald A/Ts etc etc etc
in the past it is those plonkers who have given this forum a bad name and caused the cowboy image.
some people don't take the time to think about where they are going and the impact it will have on the area/community.
I'm not saying that there are no plonkers on this forum as there will always be some around everywhere.
maaate even folks like myself have done slightly bad things in the past and may even still be doing similar things to this day.
just relax and take a chill pill and don't blurt out against other forum members, coz it will come back to bite you in the ass ( trust me, I know )

They cut the backs off Mu's & 70 series Toyota's, add new rear seats that put the heads and shoulders of their non-seat belted drunk passengers above the roll bar while crazily attacking the most rutted slippery and dangerous bits of track.

And just why not? It was in New Zealand for me and I don't see a reason why can't it be for others as well. Would you be okay if someone went diving on their own in the ocean or skydiving from a plane without any preparation or knowledge (or even gear)? Would you be happy to support them as well, they are having fun too.
People who go unprepared are not only damaging the tracks, but are also endangering lives and property.

Re: Thompsons Track request from Council
i think he means peolpe who first get into 4x4ing dont do it with a club at their very first experiance. certainly was the case for me, its not untill those first few times you go out that you realise you love it, then its from there that you decide to join a club and gather all the neccesary gear needed....

And if you read the other Thompsons thread (where we had to recover a truck that was nigh on over the side, and everyone in their group of 4 or 5 trucks was either drunk or stoned), you will see that at times their FUN is at the expense of other peoples time, due to their stupidity, and at their own peril. In this particular case, the son had taken dads pajero for a drive.... without dad knowing where he was going with it. On the way down he thought it would be FUN to go 2-wheel drive down the long slide and drift it down, in doing so he was about 2 inches from the point of no return, tipping over the edge, and potentially dying.

According to who? The basis for this comment is what?
Example please?]bb402c wrote:you give them a hard time for owning a four wheel drive to drop the kids at school
]bb402c wrote:then you give em shit for using them to discover the country offroad how do you no that they are not better drives than you or me or any of us
1) All for people exploring, not in for people endangering themselves or others, or rooting tracks.... another example of idiocy was dad in an old school Safari snatching his son in his brand new Surf with Road tyres at the very first lot of ruts at Thommos.... snatching with rusty old CHAIN off TIE DOWN points. Tell me how that is in anyway encouragable? Then after telling them they should turn back, they continue on and help make a right fuking mess out of things by slipping and sliding all over the show.
2) dead right, they may be a better driver than me, you or anyone else, thats not a point that was being debated.

Never said it was. It was in a Zuk, on a friends farm when i was 11 and his dad was sitting beside me. What's your point?

and to follow on the above ...........
Sure thing boss, okie dokie, right you are, whatever you say Shayne, you're the chief. [That's not what I really wanted to say but im sure moderators would admonish me harshly, and his mum might tell me off too]
Right-o Captain, will do. Next time drunken and/or pissed fuktards or ill equipped casual drivers get in trouble, and dont want to listen, ill just carry along my way, they can have their type of fun all on their own.

.........the trouble being, leaving these idiots be, is the quickest way for the track to get closed to us all. It will only take one death, or the likes of "lil master Pajero kids" dad to kick up a stink at the council, and it will be closed.

XJ, if it was ME, I would just let Darwin do his stuff.
But it aint up to me, pity......
YOu and DB and Wop and Dixie were all laughing watchers at MY first 4wd experience, now look where its got me!! You BUGGERS!!!!!
We unfortunately HAVE to educate the plonkers of this world, merely to protect the fun and sport for the responsible ones amongst us, Poor whatisface, who made these comments will come to realise the truth of what you have all said. If he doesn't, and chooses to rush off in high dudgeon, thinking we are all a bunch of control freaks, well that's good too. If he takes the comments on good spirit, and see the truths, well, that's even better innit?

Re: Thompsons Track request from Council
DB, I agree with you, as a newbie that is why I asked a few questions on another thread regarding suitability for my truck, tyres and experience to help out in upcoming tree planting trip. I recognise names here that offered advise, you obviosly found this tedious and posted a comment which I had a chuckle at , not offended as I can have a laugh too.
At the risk of being called a plonker I could have turned up, not noing the track condition, grading, distance, wrong truck and tyres. If I had an accident and someone got hurt or blocked the track for others then I would have felt like a plonker, believe me.
I prefer to do things right by all concerned. I have already contacted and had an informal meeting with the president of the local 4wd club in that area regarding joining, they recomend I go on 3 club trips with them before joining, fair enough, it could take a while for 3 trips that suit my shiny bus.
Going on a bIt I know, just thought I put a newbies point accross the lions den. Where not all louts. Hey I'm just a worn out x enduro rider with dodgy knees looking to have a bit of fun, and its a good cause, cant all be experts overnight, aye.
ps. got mud tyres and spade ready just in case
