hey Richard.
What is the purpose of the bung you are tapping in? If it is to only drain the water after the fact, it is too late, the damage has already been done to the bearings etc as the contaminated oil has already been through the system.

I don't think a little bit of emulsified oil causes too much damage to the bearing on a trip while the diff is being used.

My problem is that the truck doesn't get used during the week and thats when the rollers go rusty, so as a safeguard I want to make sure no water is trapped there. Its not costing me anything as I have all the gear on hand. There could be water in this compartment without any getting into the rest of the diff if it comes in through the pinion seal because the water will sit at the bottom.

When you drain the diff this compartment doesn't get drained so I want to make provision to drain it. It retains fluid to a depth of nearly 35mm

Today I went to toyota and priced a New Ring and pinion to go with my new locker and they told me $ 2500 so with the locker and bearings would total $ 5000 so couldn't justify it considering I have 3 used sets in the shed.

Think I will just carry a spare set on a trip.

Hi Bill

Are these the chinese ones?

I asked Jafa about his Trailgear ones but they are not available in 4.56 and Im not keen to try chinese as the ones I have seen in boxes don't impress me too much.

Has any one any feedback on them ?

You could also ring Craig at
South Island Bearing Distributors Ltd

cnr Kingsley & Brisbane Sts Sydenham Christchurch

Ph 03 377 3222

I know he stocks Italian made ones that hold up in rally cars (they often use Hilux diffs)

Having seen the difference between the chinese ones and the yukon and trail gear ones, I wouldn't touch the chinese ones. How quickly do you need one?

NZD $314 + shipping

http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDetail ... rodID=1306

Shipping will be from $67 NZD

http://ircalc.usps.gov/IntlMailServices ... 5&O=0&sd=1

I'd need to know how quickly you wanted it and speak to my brother (whos in New York), the only way to avoid big shipping is to ship to a local US address and get it sent US Postal Service to New Zealand.

Hi Richard, you say you have some used sets, if they are not through the hardening or showing to much signs of wear they will be fine, set the diff up to minimum tolerances, if the crown wheel and pinion have running marks try and set them to achieve the original markings, a little less backlash and slightly tighter preload will be fine on a pre run set. The very worst it can do is winnnnneeeeee a bit and with your hearing and the stereo blasting out your 50's and 60's music,

YOU WILL NEVER HEAR IT.

Decision made.

Bill (WJW) ordered me a Yukon Ring and pinion from the States last night .

Just have to wait now but not the end of world because the existing diff is still OK. Just hoping for a stronger setup all round.

I have never blown a diff but this is a worry when a piece of tooth falls out in the middle.

A photo I took of Willy from Blenhiem in 1996 that won the "NZ 4 Wheel drive" mag photo and a years free mags.

After the Suzuki Willy bought a Nissan Safari and he was so disappointed he gave up 4 wheel driving and now plays on a 4 wheel motor bike.

If you look the picture beside the pinion, that is what I am doing. Plenty of red hardner in the mix.

If I had a lathe I could turn up a hardwood one

Looking forward to meeting you guys in Oct on my North Is trip.

I don't think a chippy would be able to repair that, but the last time I chipped a tooth like that was when I was young and silly ( yeah I know ) and opened a Beer Bottle with my teeth, the Dentist made a brilliant job, $400 and 10000 bites latter still going strong.

NOW OLD AND SILLY,

FITZY.

Still chewing the idea over Fitzy. I was going to ask for the name of your dentist so I could have it capped.

Second thoughts. Your dentist at 20 wouldn't be alive now. :) :) :)

Keep smiling and remember to call in.

I put a post on today about the Tundra 8 inch diffs and how they have been strenghten up.

I already have the diff housing that is trussed

Image

The tundra diffs have shims to adjust the side bearings but I think the principle of the gussets is a worth while modification to remove the flex from the crown wheel.

The tundra also has a bigger pinion but still has an 8 inch crown.

Image

A person could make the gusset out of ordinary plate .

All that would be required is modifying the diff housing backward, so ground clearance
wouldn't be affected but the diff would be alot stronger.
