I sank my Pajero

Post by pouw »

Hey All

Sank my Pajero for 20 minutes in the local river (water up to dash inside and out). Anyone have any suggestions on drying it out? Its in the shop at the moment (engine seems fine as intake was only thing not submerged) but I need to dry out the insides, electrics etc. Cheers

Shiet, wont ask how or why (but Im sure you will tell us  )

Take out carpet - hang on clothesline, take seats out if the sun happens to be shining. Get a dehumidifier cranking inside. Drain gearbox/transfer/diffs unless you had breathers above the high tide mark, even then, water may have got in through seals if they were hot before you went swiming. ECU's into hot water cylinder cupboard maybe?
Advertise as one careful lady owner and get rid of it  (joke)

cheers

Wet seats can dry in less than 4 hours in the heat of summer but this time of the year it will take forever. Good luck.

Heres what happened!

I went into the river looking to rinse my rims, big mistake was not checking the depth which had changed considerably since the last time I was there. The right front wheel dropped into a hole and any attempt to drive out just pushed it deeper into the water.

Basically I submerged the car in the Hutt River for at least 20 minutes. Water was up to the top of the dashboard inside the car, and completely surrounded the car over bonnet level.

I tried a couple of times to get out in 4WD but at one point the AT Temp light came on so I stopped trying (was getting nowhere anyway) and switched off the car. I did try to change to Low Range (centre diff lock) while in the water as well.

Im not sure what damage was caused, but eventually I was towed out by someone else with a little momentum from myself, the engine did restart under water.

I let the car idle for a bit before driving forward, disengaging 4wd and went home. It seemed to run ok, was pretty smooth. The lights for 4wd and diff lock were flashing and so on, then going out and then reappearing.

Since then I have driven it only to the panel beater for the bake, and noticed as soon as I drove it how rough it felt on the road. Not in the engine which seems to sound normal under revs in neutral, but when actually moving. There is definite vibration right along the bottom of the vehicle.

The lights for 4wd etc still go on and off but the car does feel like it is in 2wd.

Anyway, that’s my story on what happened.

Whoops

Need to also get the computer out. On the passenger side footwell you will see a plastic cover (under gloveblx, but up the pillar), remove the cover (couple of screws) and remove the silver metal box by unpugging the leads.
Dry this correctly and slowy to stop corrosion. I would suggest a hot water cupboard.

The other thing you could do is to remove our speedo head if your dash was submerged, it is electronic and can be dried the same as above.
To remove this there is one screw by the windscreen uder a small cover and two under the hood part. Then remove the hood and unscrew the 2 mounting screws that hold the speedo in place.
Unlpug the 3 (or 4) connectors from the back, there is no speedo cable as its electronic.
This will allow plenty of air to get into the rest of the dash, the main looms are also directly below this.

Has the motor been going??
If not get them to also check the turbo, to ensure this isnt fill of water as they first time it goes all the water goes into the motor :o

The Pajeros are normally pretty resisilant to water inside as I have also had water inside mine.
:? Although not quite that deep :(

I am sure that apart from that everthing else will be ok

Engine is fine, only part of the car that wasnt submerged was the air intake (the only part!) which was lucky. A sparky is assessing the damage and insurance have said they will cover it which is a huge bonus.

Dont have any pics of it, but wish I had actually heh heh.
