Hi Pete the bar work really looks the shiz :!: :!: you definately need it where we're going or lots of body damage results. All of the bar work on my truck now has paint missing so it's doing it's job.
As for the trip.....the long range forecast at this stage couldn't be worse unfortunately :(

Hayden recons it'll be finished buy the end of the day. SWEET!

All the support is done for the guards.

The exhaust pipes have been tucked up out of the way on both sides.

Tread plate on the guards look good I recon.

The front is looking way different now!! The bull bar has been made narrower.

This view is into the right rear guard. This is one of the supports for the rear bars.

This is one example of Haydens welds. He's magic with the Tig.

Cheers.
Date 's already set.
Friday's the day.
The paint won't even be dry, before is gets taken off.

I'd like to ask other FJ40 owners about the front indicators.
Should I stay with the originals or put LED's on there instead?

I tend to go for the original look to LED's. Yep, they smash easy but they're only around 50 bucks to replace, cheaper than LED's.

how are the side bars mounting? I would of thought they would be coming off the chasis rather than the body tub?

We gave that a fair bit of thought. I was thinking the same as you, mount off the chassis rail. But the whole roll cage front to back is bolted to the body tub. The only part of the bar work that's bolted to the chassis rail is the front guards. That's where the original ones are mounted from.
We worked out that if the sidewalk and rear guards were mounted off the chassis rail wouldn't be as strong. It would flex to much. This way we hope it'll take more of a hammering. hey if the roll cage is bolted to the tub it must be strong yeah? :D

What about the front indicators rangi? What do you think i should do?

cool, i would hope that the bars can support the full weight of the truck, so you can jack off them, drop off banks and rub them hard against banks and trees without the body flexing. I'm sure your guy understands strength requirements if he is used to building cages for v8 supercars etc.
Im sure they will get a good test out this weekend.

As for indicators im a little in the same boat, i have none at the mo, which makes town driving a little dodgey. I still need to do some bar work and think i might go leds just for strength and also some are very water proof compared to my factory un sealed hilux jobbies.

Are you really worried about your truck looking factory? you'll be running out of parts that are factory and un modified

keep up the good work its looking mint.

hey pete another option is truck roof lights
Image
i got a pair of these to put on my G wagen as indicators as i didn't want to pay $60 for just a lens
these cost me about $22 each from transport wholesale limited i have fitted brighter bulbs i think they will have no problem with heat as they won't be running all the time like they do as roof lights
my 4wd is not a truck

old mercedes never die but sometimes they do need some love

I hear you.
Those are the questions I put to Rick n Hayden when designing this setup, "will it be strong enough?" cause what's the point in building something like this without making it as strong as it can possibly be? It'll get a good workout this weekend. And if we find weak points we'll modify it.

Thanks for your opinion re the lights.
I'm still on the fence about it.

As for the factory look? I really do love the original look. That's why i tried to keep the front guards to the original shape.

They look ok.
But if i went with another style light I like the 70 series lights. And they would fit on the 40 easily.

I think merc is on the right track. But you could probably get some cooler looking led ones that that similar tear drop kind of shape. the smaller they are the less they will get knocked around.

personally i prefer the lower profile as they are less likely to get caught on branches etc
i will admit cruiser indicators are very much a part of the cruiser shape

Hi Pete, definately keep the originals! otherwise it is not a 40!

May not be as practical but your guards are going to take the hits, not the lights, just don't hit trees at high speed! A little care goes a long way.

Guards look 8) What size and type of tube are they made of?

Cheers NJV6.

I think the original lights are part of the FJ40 look. Anything else and it could look like a, 'bitza". Bitz of this, bitz a that. Hmmm

I asked Hayden the specs on the tubing.
He tells me it's, "3.2 40MB pipe".

I hope they hold up to mate.
Hey I've rolled the truck on the roll bars and they handled it fine. They're only anchored to the tub so....yeah. At the end of the day, I'll get it modified if need be.

I'm going with the stock ones for now. But I'll still look into the slim line LED's.
